Exciting Christmas time in Lübeck: Open the door and celebrate!

In Lübeck, one of the most beautiful places in northern Germany, things get really busy in the run-up to Christmas! From December 1st to 24th, 2025, the St. Lorenz district will be transformed into a festive paradise. The multi-generational project “Luther shines” has come up with a lot of ideas to inspire citizens and arouse hope and anticipation for the upcoming Christmas. Every day a door is opened and behind each one there is a surprise.

The activities are as diverse as they are entertaining. From heartwarming concerts and singing together to a Punch and Judy show and a cozy evening of punch around the campfire – there is something for everyone here. Young visitors can demonstrate their skills at baking cookies or create their own gingerbread house. This great program is supported by various institutions and the Luther Church, who actively support the entire project. If you would like to find out more about it, you can find the complete offer either at www.lutherkirche-luebeck.de or in flyers at various locations in the district.

Christmas magic in Lübeck

Lübeck is a feast for the eyes, and not just during Advent. The old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes on a very special atmosphere at Christmas time. The historic buildings shine with lights, and the famous Christmas markets are a magnet for visitors from near and far. The historic market on the Lübeck market attracts with handicrafts and regional delicacies, including the legendary Lübeck marzipan delicacies, which are freshly and traditionally prepared every year.

One of the special highlights is the Lübeck Christmas concert in St. Mary's Church, which perfectly underlines the festive atmosphere. You can literally immerse yourself in the winter wonderland, and the smiles of the children as they look at the many lights and markets make your heart beat faster.

Look into history

However, Lübeck has more to offer than just a festive atmosphere. Interesting historical anecdotes accompany us through the streets of the city. Did you know that the oldest pharmacy in Lübeck, the Löwen-Apotheke, was founded in 1812 and is housed in one of the oldest town houses in the old town? This building even partially dates back to before the great fires of the 13th century. Remedies are still mixed here using centuries-old recipes, which gives the pharmacy a very special charm.

In addition, history buffs can learn about the sensational finds of excavator driver Jürgen Köpsel, who discovered an impressive coin collection from the 16th century in 1984. This includes around 24,000 gold and silver coins and provides a unique insight into Lübeck's trading relationships around the year 1530.

Last but not least, you can admire the craftsmen of the Lübeck Church Construction Works, who are responsible for the preservation of the five monumental churches in the old town. This workshop continues the tradition of building workshops from the time of the great medieval cathedrals and has been recognized by UNESCO as an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity”. This is how history comes to life in Lübeck!

But back to the cold season: Lübeck's festive events are the ideal opportunity to spend time together and enjoy the city's special atmosphere. No matter whether young or old, there is something for everyone here and the anticipation of Christmas is definitely a priority.
