E-scooter driver flees after accident in Lübeck – police are looking for witnesses!

An unfortunate incident occurred on June 10, 2025 in Lübeck when an e-scooter driver was involved in an accident. At 4:15 p.m., a driver wanted to turn into a property driveway in her Opel when the 35-year-old e-scooter driver slipped over the hood of the vehicle. Despite the serious event, the man initially appeared unharmed after the impact and refused to call an ambulance. Instead, he took care of his e-scooter and drove away without leaving his contact details. Only the driver and a cyclist who had observed the incident remained at the scene of the accident. The police in Moisling are now looking for information about the escaped driver, who spoke German without an accent and was wearing dark clothing. Witnesses are asked to call 0451-8097030, as Bild reports.

Was the e-scooter driver actually unprepared?

A similar incident occurred just a few weeks earlier, on May 19, in which a 33-year-old e-scooter rider fell on Stargardstrasse, also in Lübeck, without any other vehicle being involved. This accident resulted in serious injuries, but fortunately the man was able to be stabilized. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing and there is no evidence of alcohol or drug use. This raises the question of what causes e-scooter drivers in Lübeck to end up in such predicaments, as the SHZ reports.

Road safety

The increasing number of accidents involving e-scooters is an alarming reality. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, there was a 14.1% increase in e-scooter accidents with personal injuries in 2023 - a total of 9,425 accidents were reported. It is also shocking that the number of deaths has doubled from 11 to 22 within a year. The most common causes of accidents are incorrect road use and alcohol. In addition, younger drivers are disproportionately affected, which raises questions about safety and responsibility. After all, 60% of accidents occur in large cities, where the proportion of e-scooter use is particularly high, as statisticians warn.

With the legal framework for e-scooters in Germany in place since 2019, they are now an integral part of road traffic, but the safety situation remains questionable. Users must be careful to use roadways and protective strips correctly, while sidewalks are taboo. A minimum age of 14 years and a 0.5 alcohol limit for e-scooter drivers are intended to ensure more safety, but the number of accidents shows that there is still a need for action here.
