Rediscover Thomas Mann: book premiere in Lübeck on August 13th!

What's going on in Lübeck? On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the music and congress hall invites you to a special event. The literary historian and bestselling author Tilmann Lahme will present his latest work “Thomas Mann. A Life”. The event takes place at the invitation of the renowned Buddenbrookhaus and promises exciting insights into the life of one of the most important writers of the 20th century.

Tilmann Lahme, an expert on the Manns, shows in his biography how multifaceted Thomas Mann was: as a Nobel Prize winner, literary magician, but also as a torn personality and Nazi opponent. Lahme, born in 1974, is a professor of literature at the University of Lüneburg and has already caused a stir with the bestseller "The Man's Story of a Family" (2015). His new work, published in 2025, draws on unpublished sources, diary entries and letters and is a comprehensive account of Mann's life.

A life between genius and misfortune

Thomas Mann was not only a celebrated author whose career began with “Buddenbrooks” and continued two decades later with “The Magic Mountain”. He was also an upper class man, husband and father, who always had to struggle with internal conflicts in his long marriage to Katia, which was marked by many ups and downs. Despite his great success, he was often close to the abyss, surrounded by his six children who protected him like a fortress.

In his biography, the author has also integrated personal memories from Mann's childhood friend and a never-before-published essay by Susan Sontag, giving the reader original insights into his life and thoughts. Reviewers have praised the book for its clear insights and lively style - a perfect opportunity to explore Mann's complex personality.

Moderation and remaining cards

The event will be moderated by Britta Dittmann, the Buddenbrookhaus archivist. This evening represents a unique opportunity, especially for those who are curious about new perspectives on Mann's work and life. Remaining tickets are available at the box office, so be quick, because there is likely to be a lot of interest in this literary event!
