Autumn magic in the Wohldorf Forest: Experience culture and enjoyment!

The splendor of autumn colors is currently lighting up the Wohldorf Forest in Hamburg, which is considered the largest deciduous forest in the city. The NDR took a closer look at the beauty of this special place in the most recent program “Autumn in the Wohldorf Forest” on Saturday, November 1st, 2025. The show shows how much nature in Northern Germany provides relaxation and inspiration. In addition to impressive landscapes and cultural highlights worth seeing, the art of illustrator Rüdiger Tillmann is also honored, who brings forests to life with his ink drawings and watercolors. Visitors can currently admire his work in the BrookHus in Duvenstedt, as [NDR reports](https://www.ndr.de/ Fernsehenen/versanden/nordtour/herbst-im-wohldorfer-wald,versand-24112.html).

But the Wohldorf Forest is not the only highlight in the north. Another focus is on the state museum in Schwerin, which is now open to visitors again after a four-year renovation. With an investment of 10 million euros, generously supported by the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation, art lovers can now marvel at an important collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th century as well as modern works in an exhibition space of 400 square meters.

Cultural diversity in the north

Another exciting event is the village theater in Timmel, where the play “Timmel unner Strom” tells the history of the village from 1918 to 1925. These performances are in Low German and are organized by dedicated volunteers, which underlines the cultural ties of the village community. There are also monthly “Blue Music” music evenings in Oldenburg, which take an inclusive approach and bring people with and without disabilities together - a project that shows how important community through music is.

Those who prefer film can look forward to the Nordic Film Days in Lübeck, which will take place from November 5th to 9th. With around 200 films, including the opening film “Therapy for Vikings”, the festival offers a platform for Northern European films that are unique of their kind in Germany.

Initiatives and commitment

There are also notable initiatives in the region, such as that of the island women on Poel. This group of dedicated women have come together to give holidaymakers a special time - be it with homemade cakes or other creative offerings. Such projects show how locally rooted initiatives can enrich the tourist experience.

A clear example of cross-generational interaction is the full catering of the toy shop that Vanessa Bente took over from her father in Oldenburg. The store, which has been family-owned since 1932, combines tradition with fresh ideas.

The new formats that are gaining a foothold in Germany include the so-called “Silent Reading Parties” in Osnabrück. Here people can read quietly in a pleasant atmosphere, without cell phones - a return to an original form of relaxation that is already popular abroad.

The diverse cultural offerings are rounded off with an evening tour of the Lübeck castle monastery. This tour takes you through the former Dominican convent and offers exciting stories that end the evening charmingly with a Nordic custom, beer specialties and apple juice.

All of these activities and offers show that the North has its finger on the pulse when it comes to culture, community and volunteer work. Those interested can find information about the diverse excursion destinations in this region on the new thematic portal for travel and excursion destinations in Northern Germany, which provides tips for cycling and nature experiences. There is a lot to experience in this colorful autumn season - pack your hiking boots and enjoy nature!
