Nordic Film Days: Art and Cinema – Focus on Anders Zorn!

There is anticipation in Lübeck for a cultural highlight: On Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, the Lübeck Adult Education Center invites you to a special lecture in the auditorium at Falkenplatz 10 as part of the Nordic Film Days. Under the title “From the screen to the screen – the Swedish painter Anders Zorn in the film”, the renowned film historian Jörg Schöning will shed light on the connection between art and cinema.

Anders Zorn (1860–1920) is considered one of the most important Swedish painters of his time. Famous for his portraits and his exciting personal life, Zorn made a lasting impression with his paintings. During the lecture, Schöning will not only address the artist's historical relevance, but also the filmic adaptations of his persona. For example, there are historical film recordings of Zorn, which are shown in the lecture, and the feature film “Zorn” from 1994 is presented as a cinematic portrait of the painter.

A look behind the scenes

The aim of the lecture is to give the listeners an insight into the interplay between painting, myth and media history. The event promises exciting perspectives on artistic work that continues to resonate to this day. The lecture will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and entry is free - registration is not required.

In addition, the adult education center's auditorium is barrier-free, so that as many people interested in art and film as possible can take part. But it's not just the event itself that's remarkable, the name Anders also has an interesting history. The name, widely used in Scandinavian languages, is the equivalent of the Greek Andreas and has historical roots dating back to the 14th century. In Sweden, Anders is now one of the most common male first names and has given rise to the surname Andersson, which can be found in around one in 30 Swedes.

Cultural influences and superstitions

In addition, the name also has cultural anecdotes associated with it, such as the reference to Donald Duck, known in Denmark as Anders And. The name day for Anders, which falls on November 30th, was once linked to peasant superstitions, particularly the weather forecast for Christmas.

So if you love art and film or are simply curious about the connection between these two worlds, you should come to the Lübeck Adult Education Center on November 4th. Jörg Schöning's lecture promises not only interesting information, but also an exciting discussion about the role of Anders Zorn in the world of art and media.
