Nordic Film Days Lübeck: Barrier-free cinema for everyone from November 5th!
It's going to be cinematic again in Lübeck! The 67th Nordic Film Days starts on November 5th and will attract numerous film enthusiasts to the Hanseatic city until November 9th, 2025. A special highlight this year: the “Cinema for All” initiative, which focuses on accessibility and offers measures for deaf, hearing-impaired and neurodivergent fans. This reports ndr.de.
Those responsible have come up with a lot of ideas to improve access to cultural events for everyone. Audio descriptions, particularly provided in the Film Forum series, and optimized German subtitles for deaf people guarantee that no one is left out. An absolute treat is the live performance in sign language of the animated film “The Last Whale Singer”, which also includes an audience discussion.
A program for all ages
The Young Audience section, headed by Hanna Reifgerst, who will take over overall management of the Nordic Film Days from January 2026, is aimed specifically at children and young people. Here, young explorers aged four and over can immerse themselves in the exciting world of film. In addition to exciting film screenings, an interactive program for daycare groups and schools is offered, which takes place in a barrier-free venue, the Infinity Dome. The section offers something for all ages, including the short film program “The Tingling on the Skin,” which deals with the complex emotional worlds of teenagers.
Another important point is the sensory-adapted screenings that welcome neurodivergent visitors. These performances are characterized by a relaxed atmosphere, with dimmed lights and reduced volumes - a real relief for many cinemagoers.
Blockbusters and more
An absolute highlight of the film festival will be the German premiere of “Therapy for Vikings” with the charismatic Mads Mikkelsen, which will be shown on the screen on November 5th. Wheelchair spaces are also available and people accompanying severely disabled people can book entire tickets free of charge - a simple booking option makes it easy to look forward to the cinema evening.
Most films are in the original language and supported by English subtitles. Some special screenings also offer German SDH subtitles, so that no one has to miss out on watching the film. The Nordic Film Days in Lübeck promise a rich, barrier-free experience for all cinephiles!
It will be exciting to see how the film days develop and what surprises they still have in store until November 9th. With so much focus on inclusion, we can only look forward to an even more diverse film program.
