Stargazing in Lübeck: Free experience for the whole family!

It's that time again in Lübeck: the night calls the star friends! On January 16, 2026, the Lübeck Observatory will open its doors for public observation of the night sky from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The event promises exciting insights into the world of planets, stars and celestial objects. Admission is free and no prior registration is required - ideal for anyone who wants to look up to the sky without any worries. The free access is particularly family-friendly and attracts all interested parties, including schoolchildren and students.

A look at the stars will be possible under clear skies, while the event will be canceled in the event of precipitation or cloudy and cold weather. Visitors should make sure they wear warm, weather-appropriate clothing - after all, it can get pretty chilly in the cold season! For those who have difficulty climbing stairs, there are additional telescopes accessible at ground level. To access the observation tower there is a steep ladder leading up, which promises a bit of adventure!

Venue and directions

The Lübeck Observatory is run on a voluntary basis by the “Arbeitskreis Sternfreunde Lübeck e.V.” operated and is located in the Grönauer Baum school in the south of the city. The new observatory was recently opened after the old one was forced to close at the end of 2016. Thanks to generous donations, particularly from the Sparkassenstiftung zu Lübeck, a modern observation tower with a dome containing a large telescope was built. Access is also barrier-free so that guests with disabilities can also take part in the observations.

Current program and outlook

The public observation takes place not only today, but regularly every Friday evening in the autumn-winter season. The state-of-the-art telescopes with their 20-inch astrographs offer a view into the depths of space, which amazes many participants. However, if there is a lot of traffic, waiting times may occur. The meeting point is also on Schwalbenweg, where the stairs lead to the observation tower.
Further information, including a current calendar of events, can be found on the observatory's website: sternwarte-luebeck.de.

A very special offer is the “Astronomy Meeting”, which allows comet observation on October 19, 2024, or the open day on March 29, 2025. Here you can experience the exciting cosmos directly and share the fascination of astronomy - a great opportunity for young and old to be inspired in the open air. Who knows, maybe one or two interested visitors will be the next astronomer who wants to discover the universe for themselves!
Seize the chance and let yourself be inspired by one of Lübeck's most fascinating events!
