VfR women lose in Lübeck: penalty decides close game!

Last weekend, the VFR Horst footballers had an exciting, albeit unfortunate duel against the hosts from Lübeck. Despite the enormous effort and some tactical approaches, the Horster women were unable to score points in the end and had to be content with a narrow defeat.

The Lübeck women dominated the first half, but were unable to convert their field advantages into goals. There were few compelling chances to score on both sides, which made the game a tough affair until the 70th minute. But then the decisive moment: a foul in the penalty area led to a penalty for the hosts. Benita Sander, who acted like a real sniper, converted the penalty with a strong and well-placed shot.

The penalty dilemma

Penalties are one of the most exciting but also most challenging situations in football. Around 5,300 penalties have been taken in the history of the Bundesliga and 3,800 in the DFB Cup. Analysis shows that it is essential to take the perfect penalty - this requires precise technique and a well-considered strategy. Placement and shooting speed are crucial: aiming flat into the corners is the most effective method.

With an ideal shot speed of 115 to 120 km/h, the goalkeeper only has 0.34 to 0.35 seconds to react, increasing the likelihood of the shot becoming unstoppable. It is all the more fascinating that despite this requirement, the Horst players performed powerfully after falling behind. They were more compelling in the last few minutes, but the equalizer failed to materialize.

Outlook for the winter break

The Horster women ended the first half of the season with 10 points from 10 games and now have to hope for their injured players to return next year. Unfortunately, a few unnecessary defeats prevented a better result. Despite the many challenges, the mood in the team is optimistic, especially since there is the opportunity to hunt for points again at the winter tournament, the VR Bank Cup, in the JSS Hall between January 10th and 11th, 2026.

Overall, the Horster girls were disappointed at their performance in Lübeck, but there remains hope for a turnaround in the second half of the season. If they can regain their skills and integrate the injured players back into the team, nothing will stand in the way of a successful second part of the season.
