Simone Pottmann: New Procetin brings a breath of fresh air to Altholstein!
Neumünster, Deutschland - A fresh wind blows through the Ev.-Luth. Church circle Altholstein! On Friday evening, 68 out of 75 votes was elected as the new Pröpfin in the Neumünster Simone Pottmann Bugenhagenkirche. There were only 4 votes against them, and 3 voters: inside kept back. This step not only marks a change in the management, but also a promising departure for the church circle, which counts around 175,000 members in 53 municipalities and is therefore the largest in Schleswig-Holstein. Pottmann will probably take her new office on November 1, 2025 after succeeding Stefan Block, who will retire after 23 years. Christian Kröger will take over the management until she took office.
The choice of Pottmann is a sign of change, especially with regard to the role of women in the church. More and more women are taking management positions in the Evangelical Church, which reflects a social change. "We are in an exciting time," says Pottmann, who has set itself the goal of being a prison of the constructive dialogue. Her commitment already shows her ideas for the active participation of life in Neumünster, where she will live with her husband in the pastorate at the old churchyard.
background and qualifications
The native of the Rhineland brings an impressive academic career. She studied theology at the universities in Marburg, Wuppertal and Bochum. In addition, she was a research assistant at the Ruhr University and pastor in Essen before becoming a pastor of the Kaltenkirchen parish in 2010. In the past seven years, she has also served as Vice President of the Altholstein Synod. Pottmann is not only an experienced pastor, but also looks after a total of 30 parishes as a spiritual direction of the South Propstei and more than 40 pastors. These communities extend from Neumünster to Bad Bramstedt to Henstedt-Ulzburg.
Among her first congratulations was synod president Dr. Jutta Lüttges, who praised Pottmann's skills and their commitment. The Nordkirchen-Bischöfin Nora Steen, which Pottmann had proposed for election, also agreed and confidently commented on the upcoming challenges. At a time when the role of women in the church is redefined, Pottmann's choice is particularly important and is in accordance with a comprehensive trend that increasingly puts women in pastoral offices.
The role of women in the church
Historically, the role of women in the Christian churches has changed a lot, especially in the 20th century due to the influences of women's movements. These changes have led to more women have taken on theological courses and have thus qualified to take on pastoral tasks. A number of significant steps have also been taken in recent decades to give women access to offices such as pastor or bishop. The first Lutheran bishop worldwide, Maria Jepsen, was appointed in 1992. Pottmann's election can thus be seen as part of a greater social change that drives the equality in the church. With a view to the future of the Altholstein church district, Pottmann will take responsibility with a dedicated team at their side and tackle the challenges that lie ahead of her, with an open ear and a clear focus on the dialogue. The municipalities are eagerly awaiting the new impulses that their term of office could bring.
Time is ripe for changes, and Simone Pottmann seems to have the right hand to bring a breath of fresh air to the church circle.
