Nyding dairy farm: State-of-the-art technology in use for Kummerfeld's cows!

In Kummerfeld, 21-year-old Malte Krohn enthusiastically runs the Nyding dairy farm, an impressive facility that is a real pioneer in agriculture with its state-of-the-art technology. After the early death of his father, who was 62, Malte took over the farm and has since faced the challenge of continuing to run the business with 300 cows. They produce an impressive 3.6 million liters of milk every year, and the farm covers an area of 270 hectares where the feed for the animals is grown.

The automation on the dairy farm is remarkable: Malte Krohn invested around 1.25 million euros in modern technology, including five milking robots and a feeding robot. These investments not only enable him to manage efficiently, but also create space to spend more time with his family and his hobbies. The feeding robot ensures that the cows are always served the right mix of siled grass and corn, tailored to their individual needs.

Innovative milking technology and animal welfare

A very special feature of the Nyding dairy farm is the freedom that the cows are given during milking. They can decide for themselves when they should be milked, which significantly improves animal welfare. The milking process itself begins with thorough cleaning of the teats and is then carried out using a laser scan. The entire process is designed to be based on the animals’ needs. Depending on their milk production, cows are milked between four to five times or just two times per day.

Each cow is equipped with a responder that continuously provides data about her milk production and health. This means Malte Krohn can keep track of the well-being of his animals at all times. Special attention is also paid to the calves, of which 300 are born every year. Among the cows there is a particularly loyal companion, Jana-Theresa Krohn's favorite cow, who recently died after her tenth calf.

The role of technology in agriculture

The Nyding dairy farm is not only an example of successful family involvement in agriculture, but also reflects a trend: There are around 161,700 animal-keeping businesses in Germany, 48 percent of which will use at least partially automated systems in 2022/2023. Technical solutions for feeding are particularly popular, with 35 percent relying on grinding and mixing devices. Around 8,830 companies, i.e. around 5 percent of all animal husbandry companies, use automatic milking systems, which shows that progress is also being made in German agriculture.

In order to support the dairy farm in everyday life, Malte Krohn has two employees who help him do the daily work in the cowshed between 5 and 6 a.m. In addition to the cows, the farm also has two donkeys, Cookie and Minze, which Jana-Theresa Krohn wanted and who give the farm an additional, endearing charm.

Malte Krohn's passion for the family system and agriculture is reflected not only in his investments, but also in his commitment to local football. He plays for the FC Nyding team and has been a loyal HSV fan for 20 years. The Nyding dairy farm shows how modern technology and tradition can go hand in hand - a good example of the future of agriculture.
