Traffic jam horror on the last weekend in July: vacationers meet construction sites!
The summer holidays are just around the corner and the last weekend in July promises to be a real challenge for drivers. According to information from ADAC The five northern German states, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, are on vacation from today. This means that a total of 14 federal states are on summer vacation, while only Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are still in school.
Things can get really busy in the next few days, especially on the motorways. Around 1,250 construction sites are active and many of them remain in place during the travel period. This not only provides thrills, but also long traffic jams, particularly caused by day trippers and holidaymakers returning from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Scandinavia. The peaks in traffic congestion are to be expected primarily on Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.
Current traffic forecasts
If you prefer a quiet journey, you should take advantage of the week: from Tuesday to Thursday it is much more relaxed on the roads as there is less rush hour traffic. By the way, there is a summer travel ban for trucks over 7.5 tons on Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. until the end of August.
The listing of particularly busy routes is also no surprise and includes important highways to the North and Baltic Seas as well as the motorways A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A11, A19, A24, A61, A93, A95/B2 and A99. Anyone who needs up-to-date route planning or would like to find out about construction sites and traffic flow can come along ADAC Maps a helpful companion at hand. This shows real-time traffic flow, disruptions and even forecasts for later departures.
Full closures and foreign history
Several full closures have also been announced for the coming days. No journeys are possible on the A46 towards Düsseldorf on July 25th from 9 p.m. to July 28th at 5 a.m. There will also be closures on the A96 from Lindau to Munich at the same time. There are long-term jokes on the A60 between Bingen and Mainz until September 2nd between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. as well as on the A45 between Hagen and Gießen, where the situation will continue until further notice.
But it's not just inner-German roads that are affected; Even abroad, especially in Austria and the Czech Republic, travelers must expect the risk of traffic jams on important holiday routes. The border controls at the German borders, which have been expanded since May, are also causing delays at motorway crossings such as Suben, Walserberg and Kiefersfelden. Waiting times cannot be ruled out here.
And to ensure that your driving runs smoothly: Drivers should not forget the emergency lane in slow traffic. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 320 euros.
So if you plan to use the road, you should prepare well and keep an eye on the traffic - because summertime is travel time and it can sometimes get pretty chaotic!
