Tourist drama on the Müritz: rowing boat capsizes in a storm!
A bright summer day on July 24, 2025 suddenly turned into a nightmare for five Berlin tourists when their wooden rowing boat capsized on the Müritz. The group, consisting of four men and one woman between the ages of 54 and 72, was traveling about 750 meters from the shore in changeable and stormy weather and strong waves. When the waves took over, the inevitable happened - all passengers fell overboard and had to cling to a fairway buoy to avoid being blown away. According to NDR, the emergency call was made at 12:35 p.m.
The rescue workers who were promptly alerted, including the fire department, DLRG, DRK and water police, quickly had an overview of the situation. After about 30 minutes, all five people were rescued from the water. Two of them suffered mild hypothermia, while the others remained uninjured.
Rescue under difficult conditions
The complex rescue required quick action. Despite the rough weather and strong waves, the emergency services showed a remarkable sensitivity to the situation. All rescued tourists received medical care and health checks upon their return to land.
As recommended by the water police, none of the passengers were equipped with a life jacket. This fact highlights the importance of always paying attention to the weather conditions and taking appropriate safety measures, even in seemingly harmless conditions.
Safety measures on inland waters
In light of recent events, water police are urging all boaters to: "Be aware of changes in the weather and always wear a life jacket, even if the water appears calm. Do not overload your boat and return to shore immediately if warning levels appear." Such advice is crucial to avoid similarly dramatic situations in the future.
Water rescue is an essential public service that is organized by various aid organizations such as DLRG, fire department and DRK. These dedicated volunteers are able to respond competently to emergencies, be it boating accidents, swimming or other dangers in and around the water, as Wikipedia describes. In such situations, not only well-trained rescuers come into play, but also modern lifeboats and rescue teams that work in a coordinated manner to provide help as quickly as possible.
Given current events, it is of the utmost importance that boaters remain vigilant and research weather conditions before setting out to sea. Safety on the water is a top priority in order to preserve the enjoyment of nature. So stay careful and enjoy the beauty of the Müritz and its surroundings!
