Bremen at the top: Bovenschulte will lead the Federal Council in 2025!
With a breath of fresh air into the next few months: As of today, Bremen will chair the Federal Council. Andreas Bovenschulte, the Prime Minister of the SPD, was unanimously elected as the new President of the Federal Council. This is not only a significant step for Bremen, but also an exciting opportunity to raise the state's voice on a national and international level. Sat1 Regional reports on this change, which takes place on a regular basis every year, starting with North Rhine-Westphalia and ending with Bremen.
Bovenschulte succeeds Anke Rehlinger, the Prime Minister of Saarland. In his new role, he will chair the meetings and represent the committee at various meetings, both at home and abroad. Interestingly, in the absence of the Federal President, the President of the Federal Council also assumes his powers. Jens Böhrnsen last held office in this role for 30 days in 2010.
A strong team behind Bovenschulte
Andreas Bovenschulte is not alone at the top: he receives support from Nancy Böhning, who is involved in the development of the political agenda as the federal and European representative. Böhning will also take over the chairmanship of the European Chamber of the Federal Council, which underlines the increased importance of Bremen in Europe.
Under the motto “Many strengths – one country”, Bovenschulte would like to promote federal cooperation between Bremen and neighboring countries. He emphasizes how important it is to find national answers and to present Bremen as a port, trade and science location.
Planned highlights of the presidency
Several events are planned as part of his term of office. A cultural highlight will be the opening event on November 17th in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. This series of important dates will continue, with special celebrations around German Unity Day in 2026, which will take place over three days in Bremen. Preparations for this are already in full swing.
Bovenschulte's travel destinations and receptions as Federal Council President are also being voted on. This gives him the opportunity to skillfully represent Bremen not only at the national level, but also at the international level.
