Bremen starts the Bremen saves project: Students learn to save lives!

An innovative project is being launched in Bremen and Bremerhaven to help increase resuscitation rates and increase awareness of first aid. The program entitled “Bremen saves” aims to give students from the 7th grade onwards the necessary skills to act correctly in an emergency. This includes practical resuscitation exercises that were initiated for the first teachers on November 3rd and 4th by the “Bremer Herzen Foundation”. The initiative is being carried out in close cooperation with the ADAC Foundation, the AOK Bremen/Bremerhaven and the accident fund Freie Hansestadt Bremen, as senatspressestelle.bremen.de reports.

Classes will cover various aspects of resuscitation, including recognizing cardiac arrest, making an emergency call, and performing chest compressions. The goal is that up to 10,000 lives can be saved every year if students are able to act quickly and effectively. Resuscitation is seen not just as a practical skill, but as a human duty that everyone should practice.

A clear roadmap

In the planned development phase, schools will be provided with training materials and staff, including teachers and school social workers, will receive appropriate training. By the end of the 2026/2027 school year, at least two trained resuscitation trainers should be available in every school. Mandatory resuscitation instruction is intended for the following:

  • 2026/2027: Klassen 7 und 8
  • 2027/2028: Klassen 7 bis 9
  • 2028/2029: Klassen 7 bis 10

While the teachers are being trained, the ADAC Foundation not only provides 1,110 resuscitation manikins, but also teaching materials for the schools. The further training of teachers is also recognized by the State Institute for Schools (LIS). The AOK Bremen/Bremerhaven and the Bremen Accident Insurance Fund support the initiative and ensure that relevant information about training courses is published on their websites.

A little more security through training

The need for resuscitation training is also evident in other federal states. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the “Check – Call – Push” initiative is being introduced in schools – a measure that experts consider to be overdue. Sinja Wosnig, who learned lay resuscitation at the age of 15 and was able to save her father in a critical situation, emphasizes how important it is to act immediately. Your example illustrates how life-saving first aid can be when there are no medical professionals available in an emergency, as wdr.de reports.

As part of the German Red Cross (DRK) first aid course, no previous knowledge is required and essential skills are taught. From protecting yourself and treating wounds to life-saving emergency measures - all of this is offered in a structured course. It includes various modules that are specifically tailored to emergency situations. The DRK course not only offers an opportunity to learn how to deal with emergencies, but also has the goal of increasing the number of first aiders in Germany, as drk.de describes.

With the introduction of resuscitation classes and the various first aid training initiatives, it is clear that society is pulling together to not only train people, but also to save lives. The faster and more competently we can react in emergencies, the greater the chances of success.
