Web Push in Bremerhaven: Secure and data protection compliant?

What's happening in Bremerhaven? Mayor Melf Grantz recently visited the renowned Lloyd shipyard, a visit that underlines the combination of tradition and innovation in the city. A new web push notification service offered by Bremerhaven.de was also presented on this occasion. How Bremerhaven.de reported, this service offers selected news directly to users' devices. The practical thing about it? No personal data is stored, only the selection of messages subscribed to.

But that's not enough! The service only stores a copy of the data locally on the user's device, which means that it is not possible to identify the person. At a time when data protection is a top priority, this is an important aspect that provides security for users. However, the notification function is not available on all devices. Users must ensure that their browser remains open in the background on some devices in order to receive the desired messages.

Risks and Consent

Another point that... CleverPush The issue addressed concerns the guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force a good two months ago. For users of web push notifications, this means that in most cases a data processing contract is necessary, as user data such as browser ID, language and country are further processed here. CleverPush offers a digitally acceptable ADV, which simplifies the whole thing a bit.

What is important when opting in is that users are informed about the type of push notifications, be it related to breaking news, sports or politics. CleverPush also provides a sample text for the opt-in message. However, the provider assumes no legal responsibility - so users should be careful here!

What happens next?

According to the new notification service from Bremerhaven.de, the settings can be adjusted and even deactivated at any time. If you are not on the website for 14 days, the notifications are automatically deactivated. But don't worry: There will be no notification if there is no new information in the subscribed messages.

A small downside remains: There is a risk that service providers from a third country, such as the USA, are used, where there is no adequate level of data protection. By activating the notifications, users agree to the consent in accordance with Article 49 paragraph 1 lit a) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

Overall, the mayor's visit to the Lloyd shipyard and the introduction of the new notification service show that Bremerhaven not only relies on tradition, but is also ready to embrace innovation. It remains exciting to see how these developments will affect the city and its citizens.
