Enjoying fish since 1860: Bodes delights Bremen with fresh specialties!
A real gem of the fishing industry has been established in Bremen for over 160 years: Bodes. Founded in 1860, the fifth generation is now running the business. The focus is on the fish trade and gastronomy, and the wide selection makes not only gourmets happy. Weser Kurier reports that Bodes not only brings quality, but also a long tradition. Customers can expect a lunch menu from Tuesday to Friday, which shows what the North Sea has to offer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The lunch menu offers a tempting selection: fish rolls, fried herring, rollmops and a delicious seafood salad are just a few delicacies here. For those suffering from hunger, there is also the fried fish baguette for 4.10 euros. But it's not just the classics that are on the menu; exclusive favorites such as Irish oysters and caviar are also available. The ambience of the store remains simple and functional, with bar tables outside that invite you to linger, especially in summer.
History and development
The history of Bodes has its ups and downs. The former owner Franz Ludwig Bodes II died in 1921, after which his wife Emma and daughter Emmy continued to run the business. In the 1920s, inflation became noticeable, which led to the closure of the branches on Nordstrasse and Faulenstrasse. During the Second World War, the branch on Sögestrasse had to close due to bombing. After the war there were cuts and in 1953 the shop on Ostertorsteinweg was leased. Nowadays, a tile decoration with a seagull is a reminder of the company's eventful history, as the Bodes website describes.
In 1960, Emmy Koch-Bodes moved into a new shop at Bischofsnadel 1-2. The family built the commercial building on a rubble site. The next generation, represented by Peter Koch-Bodes, joined the company in 1960 and took over management in 1973. Under his aegis, the fish wholesale business in the region was expanded and outsourced to the Bremen wholesale market in 1987. Continuous adaptation to market conditions has made Bodes what it is today.
Current offer and a hit with the public
The lunch specials are still very popular. A special highlight is the Hallig breakfast, which is offered every two weeks. There is also occasionally lobster pasta. Guests can select and prepare the fresh fish, which comes straight from the source, at the counter themselves. The offer also includes quiches made from salmon or tuna cuts as well as individually composed mixed plates.
In recent years, Bodes has paid attention to making the range sustainable: since 2005, the store has been one of the first specialist stores in Germany to be certified according to the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). These standards guarantee that the fish comes from environmentally friendly sources. People are also drawn to the tastings, which often fill up quickly.
Despite the busy life in the city, Bodes remains a popular destination for everyone looking for good food and an appealing atmosphere. The famous canned foods, especially sardines, are very popular and are not only a delicacy for northern lights. The opening times are generous: Tuesday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop remains closed on other days. If you are looking for fresh fish with a story, then Bischofsnadel 2 is the right place for you!
