A new wind at Werder Bremen: Steffen relies on game culture and team spirit!

Werder Bremen is on the verge of an exciting new beginning in the Bundesliga, and at just the right time. With Horst Steffen as the new coach, the club hopes to bring a breath of fresh air into the team. November 7th, 2025 could go down as a turning point in the club's history, because not only are the players in demand, but also the fans, who have to adapt to a new game idea. ZDF reports that the processes under Steffen are fundamentally different from the previous strategies under Ole Werner.

Despite the fresh approach, getting used to it won't be easy. Injury-related absences and new additions that have not yet worked in bring unrest into the preparations. Marvin Ducksch is out indefinitely with a calf strain, while other important players such as Veljkovic, Friedl and Kownacki are also missing from training. This affects the training intensity and the implementation of the new style of play, which relies on a lot of ball possession and a back four.

The new course under Steffen

The change of coach from Ole Werner, who moved to RB Leipzig, gives Werder Bremen the opportunity to reorient themselves. Steffen not only brings new ideas with him, but also his long-time assistant coach Raphael Duarte. Together they are pursuing a clear plan: promoting team spirit, targeted further development of the playing culture and the necessary change in the squad. NADR highlights that the 2024/25 season for Werder will be under the motto “More than just points”.

The balance of the last games shows that Werder is navigating a mixed course. Although they are currently in 9th place with 12 points and have achieved two 1-0 wins and two draws, the players still lack a clear understanding of Steffen's game concept. A win against Wolfsburg would be crucial to establish themselves in the top half of the table and possibly also to dismiss the coach of the next opponent, Paul Simonis - a risk that Steffen has to accept.

On the way to success

The players react differently to the upheaval. While some progress and embrace the coach's ideas, others struggle to adapt to the new ways of running. However, Steffen is optimistic and has already gained the trust of the team and those around him. He relies on the development of young talent, such as the 18-year-old Coulibaly, who will become part of the defense. Werder is also planning to invest millions in expanding the youth campus in order to lay the foundation for future success.

Werder Bremen has clear goals for the future, and with the right mix of experience and talent, the club could get back on the road to success. Through active communication and the promotion of young players, Steffen could be the key to the club's stable and positive long-term development. Squad changes, such as the loan transfer of Maximilian Wöber from Leeds United, are intended to strengthen the defense and at the same time take new beginnings into account. Now it's important to set the course for a successful season and, as always, the team needs the support of its passionate fans.
