Werder Bremen: Injuries are increasing – doctors on duty!

The situation at Werder Bremen looks anything but rosy. The club is currently dealing with a plethora of injuries, bringing back memories of the 2019/20 season. At the time, the team was also plagued by injury problems, with a total of 22 players having to sit out games while eight professionals were re-injured during rehabilitation. This is a nightmare that those responsible want to avoid at all costs. Mitchell Weiser, Marvin Ducksch, Jens Stage, Justin Njinmah and Olivier Deman are currently on the injured list, with Weiser particularly badly affected by a torn cruciate ligament.

As Weser Kurier reports, there is no discernible pattern behind the injuries, and the club has even recently reorganized its medical department. This is in direct response to the ongoing injury issues which are having a dramatic impact. A new contact person will be Dr. Alberto Schek, who was previously team doctor at Werder and will now act as head doctor of the new sports medicine department. The Paracelsus Clinic Bremen, which acts as the club's medical partner, has pushed ahead with planning for a new center for sports medicine and prevention in the Weser Stadium, which is scheduled to open in October.

Medical innovations and training intensity

The focus is heavily on load control, a topic that is extremely important for the players, especially under the new coach Horst Steffen. Steffen has increased the training intensity, which motivates the players to prove themselves. But not everyone can withstand this increased stress, which leads to injuries. Load control in training is crucial to ensure that training stimuli are used effectively without overloading the players.

The creation of the new sports medicine center in the Weser Stadium, which offers space on two floors with around 500 square meters, could perhaps defuse the situation. Dr. Schek and his team will concentrate on reducing the susceptibility to injuries and strengthening prevention. The new approach to medical care is expected to finally get recurring injury problems under control. Sports director Frank Baumann was optimistic about the return of Dr. Schek and the partnership with the Paracelsus Clinic, which was intensified at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

These reforms are urgently needed because the situation is very similar to that before relegation to the second division. The club wants to ensure that players are not only ready to play, but also able to fully endure the intensity of the game. It remains to be seen whether the combination of a new coach, a reorganized medical department and an improved training approach will lead to a turnaround in the near future.

Looking into the future

The coming period will be crucial for Werder Bremen. With the opening of the new medical center and the reorganization of the medical department, there is a clear focus on injury prevention. The goal is to avoid similar disasters to those in the past and get the team back on track. Hopefully players can navigate the new approach well.

The club is aware that it has to act quickly in order not to jeopardize the team's dynamic. Now, at the latest, a careful analysis and adjustment of training methods are required so that Werder can realize its sporting ambitions in the long term. Let us be surprised to see how things develop and whether the new measures will have an effect.

The fans can only hope that there will be better news from the injury front soon and that the players will soon be able to play at full strength again. Werder Bremen aims to find its way back to its old strength, but for this to happen, the efforts on every pitch have to be right - both in terms of sport and medicine.

The coming weeks will show whether the club's realignment falls on fertile ground and whether Werder Bremen can turn things around.
