Emma and Noah: The top first names in Northern Germany 2025 revealed!
It's that time again: The current first name rankings for 2025 are here and show which names are once again very popular with new parents in Northern Germany. The most popular duo this year is Emma and Noah, as Radio Hamburg reports. Noah was able to maintain its position at the top of the boys' names, while Emma has now taken first place among the girls' names.
The evaluation is based on an analysis of around 260,000 birth reports from 375 cities, which covers around 40 percent of all newborns in Germany. For the boys, Noah is followed by Mats in second place, followed by Henry in third place. What is surprising is that Matteo and Liam, who have been more popular in recent years, have now been relegated to the lower ranks. New to the boys' top ten are Levi (5th place), Ben (8th place), Adam (9th place) and Oskar (10th place). Fiete, on the other hand, who was still very popular last year, has lost his place on the list.
Popular girl names
There are also interesting shifts among the girls. Emma has moved from second place to pole position, while Ella and Ida occupy second and third place. Mia, Maja and Emilia, on the other hand, have to lose a few places. New to the top ten are Clara, Juna and Frieda. These changes show that new parents are not only relying on classics, but are also choosing fresh, creative names.
Many Nordic names are particularly popular in northern Germany. For example, the highly sought-after first names in Hamburg include Elisa, Tilda and Jasper, while in Schleswig-Holstein names like Fjella and Jonna are given. This shows a clear regional preference and a connection to the region's cultural roots, dating back to Nordic history.
