Sylt, the pearl of the North Sea, is known not only for its impressive beaches, but also for its long tradition of nude bathing. On the popular island, naturist culture (nudism) is at its best. Even before the 19th century, nudity while bathing was widespread. But as moral ideas changed, public nude bathing became less acceptable and was increasingly viewed as an immorality. The turning point came at the beginning of the 20th century with the emergence of the nudist movement in Germany. The first nudist club was founded near Hamburg in 1903. As a result, the first nudist beaches emerged in the 1920s, which laid the foundation for today's offerings on Sylt.
The island offers a variety of designated nudist areas. There, fans of nudist culture can bathe and sunbathe to their heart's content. The beaches are particularly popular and can be easily reached by bike or bus. Over a third of the 40 kilometer long west coast is designated as a nudist area, which alone speaks for the popularity of this area of the beach. The first official nude beach in Germany began in 1920 on Sylt. Particularly noteworthy is Buhne 16 in Kampen, which is considered the most famous nudist beach in Germany - an impressive three kilometers long and equipped with an inviting beach bistro.

Other recommended nudist beaches include the quiet Samoa Beach in Rantum and the Dünenwall Nord in Wenningstedt, where bathers can find beach chairs and restaurants. The Nordseeklinik & Oase in Westerland, with two well-equipped nudist areas, and the List Weststrand, which has a beach sauna and a kiosk, are also popular destinations. For those seeking peace and quiet, the Cape Horn beach in Hörnum, which is located on the southern tip of the island, is ideal. This variety ensures that there is something for every taste.
In many places on Sylt, nudism is taken for granted. Nude bathing outside of official beaches is tolerated as long as it does not cause any discomfort. The island administration ensures that nudist areas are clearly marked. What is particularly important here is that the information on the signs has changed over the years. While they used to be more detailed, today they are usually shorter and more concise.
Social discussions and rules
However, there are some general rules to keep in mind when choosing nudism. Skinny dipping, sunbathing and private photography among friends are permitted, while offensive behavior, staring at others or taking photos without permission is strictly off limits. In this way, naturist visitors want to ensure respectful interaction and maintain the atmosphere of openness.
