Construction site chaos threatens in Hamburg: rail traffic restricted during the summer holidays!

The summer holidays are just around the corner, and with them the time for major construction sites at Deutsche Bahn (DB). In Hamburg, travelers must be prepared for significant restrictions on long-distance, local and S-Bahn transport between July 25th and August 4th. According to the MOPO During this time, several bridges between Hamburg Central Station and Altona will be modernized and repaired. Those affected include the Alster Bridge, the Ferdinand Gate, the Stern Bridge and the Schanzen Bridge.

Travelers should be prepared for long-distance trains that travel to or from Altona to start or end directly at the main station. Train traffic in the direction of Berlin, Hanover, Frankfurt and the southern federal states will be particularly affected. Regional trains on the RE 7 (Hamburg–Kiel/Flensburg) and RE 70 (Hamburg–Kiel) lines also start and end in Altona, which means an additional change as these trains do not stop at the main station or Dammtor.

Restrictions during construction work

Things can also be uncomfortable for travelers who want to go to Denmark, as trains are being diverted to Altona. Northern railway traffic and the S-Bahn lines are also affected by the changes. The DB therefore recommends finding out about current timetable changes online or by telephone before starting your journey.

The summer holidays are traditionally a time when many construction sites are tackled in order to modernize the dilapidated infrastructure. Travel Reporter describes that these modernization measures are not only taking place in Hamburg, but also throughout Germany. For example, in North Rhine-Westphalia, extensive track renewals, bridge work and switch replacements are planned, which will last until August.

  • Gleiserneuerung zwischen Wattenscheid und Essen (30. Juni – 26. Juli)
  • Brückenarbeiten zwischen Aachen und Köln (1. bis 23. Juli)
  • Umleitungen in Hessen aufgrund Sanierungsarbeiten zwischen Kassel und Fulda (seit 1. April)

In Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg there are no major construction sites for long-distance transport, but there are restrictions on regional transport. These timed measures are necessary to improve rail infrastructure and prepare for the expected growth in travelers by 2040, as outlined in DB's management report DB.

The DB strives to further increase performance at critical stations through comprehensive structural and operational measures. Construction sites will continue to be set up in the future to ensure the quality of rail transport and sustainably strengthen the infrastructure. So if you want to travel by train during the summer holidays, you should prepare well and keep an eye on the latest information.
