Diagonal barrier on Grandweg: Less traffic, more safety!
In July 2024, the Grandweg in the Lokstedt district was redesigned with a diagonal barrier that significantly restricts through-vehicle traffic in this 30 km/h zone. This was done on the initiative of the Eimsbüttel Green Party faction, which wanted to curb sneaky traffic from the busy Emil-Andresen-Straße and the Lokstedter Steindamm, also known as the B447. As the Eimsbütteler Nachrichten reports, an interim report has now shown that the volume of traffic in the affected area has actually been reduced.
The diagonal barrier was introduced at the intersection of Grandweg/Stresemannallee/Behrkampsweg to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Before the closure, there were more accidents there, which caused great concern for residents. But after the implementation of this initiative, there has been a clear relief. The number of cars at the intersection has decreased, while the number of cyclists on Veloroute 3, which runs through the area, has increased.
Controversies and reactions
Despite the positive development, the measure has attracted both approval and criticism from the public. While many residents see the diagonal barrier as a successful example of traffic policy measures, there are concerns about a possible shift of traffic to surrounding streets. According to the information from the Hamburg District Assembly Consultations in political committees took place in advance of implementation, including in 2022. Early information for affected citizens was an important point here.
The targeted measure was designed to relieve vehicle traffic on the cycle route and at the same time prevent vehicle traffic from passing through the Grandweg. District politics are required to take responsibility in the interests of the citizens and to carry out evaluations at an early stage. A further application for an interim report was submitted six months after the ban.
A look into the future
A public meeting of the Lokstedt/Niendorf/Schnelsen regional committee is to take place in September, at which residents, interested parties and the police are invited to discuss the diagonal barrier. The Eimsbüttel Green Party has already announced that similar measures will be examined at other suitable locations in the district. Another step in the right direction to further improve the quality of life in the area and increase safety for all road users.
