Free admission! 50 museums in Hamburg celebrate Reformation Day
On October 31, 2025, Hamburg will be transformed into a cultural paradise: On this day, citizens can enter over 50 museums in the Hanseatic city free of charge on Reformation Day. A wonderful opportunity to learn about art, history and science - all without any entry costs. As ndr.de reports, the focus of this campaign is particularly on the dialogue between religions and worldviews. All Hamburg residents are warmly invited to discover their cultural treasures.
Among the participating museums is the renowned Hamburger Kunsthalle. Here, art lovers can enjoy guided tours of current exhibitions throughout the day, while live speakers are available to answer questions. A highlight for little visitors is the “Hamburger Kinderzimmer”, where they can paint and do handicrafts. In addition, dance workshops with K-Pop and Latin American rhythms are offered - this is culture to participate in!
Diverse offers and exhibitions
It's not just the Hamburger Kunsthalle that offers exciting programs. The Eppendorf University Hospital invites you to its Medical History Museum, where the topics of leprosy and Lenin's medical records are examined. Henrik Eßler also provides insightful insights into the medical history of Hamburg and provides interesting information about intelligence tests. These are just a few of the many facets that the museums will show on Reformation Day.
Another notable destination is the Rieck Haus in Curslack, an open-air museum and one of the oldest farmhouses in northern Germany. Here visitors learn a lot about life in the Vierlanden and the role of bees. Anyone interested in contemporary history should visit the University Museum: It offers an impressive exhibition on the 1968 movement, which impresses with the famous banner “Under the Gowns Muff of a Thousand Years”.
All information about the participating museums and an extensive accompanying program can be found on the website www.seeforfree.de. Here visitors can also plan their individual museum tour for Reformation Day. Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, emphasizes how important museums are for social exchange and self-encounter.
A day full of activities
What will be particularly exciting is the varied special program on October 31st. From school lessons like in Kaiser's times in the Hamburg School Museum to an OPEN SHIP with a steamship and harbor tug at the Hamburg Maritim Foundation - there is something for every age group. The Water Forum provides insights into finds from sewage sluices, while the German Harbor Museum offers shanties and family programs.
Craft activities such as designing collages at the Kunsthaus Hamburg or making plush cat keychains at MARKK also round off the portfolio. Programs are also offered in several languages for all offerings, so that no visitor is left out. The volunteers at the Museum of Work invite you to take part in practical activities and short tours are offered at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial.
Reformation Day in Hamburg promises not only a day full of free art and culture, but also an important contribution to promoting social debates and the exchange of different perspectives. Take advantage of the opportunity and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of museums!
