New splendor for the Eichtalpark: paths closed, but a lot is planned!
There is currently a lot of work going on in the Eichtalpark in Wandsbek! Residents can look forward to a beautification of the park, which began on June 13, 2025. Extensive work is planned over the next four weeks, including the planting of shrubs and perennials, the construction of water-connected paths and the installation of new benches. The park entrance on Kedenburgstrasse will also be redesigned. The path from Kedenburgstrasse to the restaurant building is currently temporarily closed. During this time the main footpath will be closed and pedestrians are asked to use the designated detours. Information on lifting the closures is available on site at the construction fences and online, including at Hamburg.de.
The work in Eichtalpark comes at an important time when the health of parks in Germany is under considerable pressure. According to the first climate park damage report from the TU Berlin, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation, 59% of all trees examined in the parks are damaged. This illustrates the seriousness of the situation: In a report, 64,202 of 157,323 trees recorded were classified as vital, while 78,522 (50%) are mildly to moderately affected and 14,598 (9%) are severely damaged or even dead. Parks like Jenischpark in Hamburg are particularly affected, where 90-100% of the trees are damaged. The report highlights that native plants cope worse with climate stress than foreign tree species, which underlines the importance of well-thought-out garden concepts DBU.de.
There may soon be no more detours
After the work in Eichtalpark is completed, it is expected that the park will become even more attractive for residents and visitors. This could have a positive impact on the use of the park, as many people enjoy spending time in nature. Another interesting event will also take place on June 27th: The nature and water adventure park in Castrop-Rauxel will be closed from early noon for a closed event organized by the Emschergenossenschaft. The north entrances, the bee house and the Emscher bridge will be closed during this period, but the park will reopen from 5 p.m. EGLV.de.
The ongoing measures to improve the places and the necessary protection strategies for nature are not just a pretty face, but also vital for biodiversity and climate adaptation. Experts demand that the parks must be designed to be future-proof in order to withstand the challenges of climate change. This also includes considering planting tree species that are resistant to heat stress, such as the downy oak or the silver linden tree. The ultimate goal is to preserve these “natural jewels” and make them tangible for future generations.
