Sascha Burchert: New goalkeeping coordinator for FC St. Pauli!
What a turnaround at FC St. Pauli! Former goalkeeper Sascha Burchert remains connected to the traditional club and takes on the newly created role as goalkeeping coordinator. In doing so, he plays a central role in the realignment of the training of young goalkeepers, a task that is close to his heart. After all, he has made a good name for himself in Hamburg and among the fans, and that should now also bear fruit in the youth sector. The Borkener Zeitung reported that Burchert, who moved from SpVgg Greuther Fürth to Hamburg in 2022, was hardly used last season due to injury. Nevertheless, he feels very connected to the people and the club in Hamburg.
Last year he had a total of four appearances in the DFB Cup and two games for the second team in the regional league. Despite his limited playing time, Burchert has gained the trust of those in charge. His sporting career should now be used to develop young talents. “I’m looking forward to the new challenge and working with the talented young players,” said Burchert positively about his professional future.
The situation in the goal
FC St. Pauli is currently facing a bitter challenge in goal. Last season, three goalkeepers, including Burchert, were dismissed. Nikola Vasilj is currently in the squad as a regular goalkeeper and Ben Voll as a challenger, but number three is missing. Only young keepers like Leon Schmidt, Kevin Jendrzey and Ronny Seibt have not yet made it into the professional squad. According to Mopo, a plan is being made to quickly close this gap. Burchert's new role could be crucial here so that the club can develop reliable talent from its own ranks in the future.
The last hope for a successor from the youth ranks was Svend Brodersen, who was even able to gain a foothold in the professional squad as a homegrown player before moving to Japan. Sports director Andreas Bornemann has already expressed interest in Burchert remaining in another role to promote these talents.
Looking into the future
The tasks for Burchert are clear: He should develop a comprehensive training concept and actively support the young keepers in their development. “I want to have a good hand so that we can see our own goalkeeper in the professional team again,” explained Bornemann to clarify the prospects. Now it is time to concretize Burchert's ideas as soon as possible in order to increase the chances of a good successor to Brodersen and thereby strengthen the club's goalkeeping hierarchy.
The next few months will show whether Burchert can convince in his new job and whether FC St. Pauli will soon be able to rely on its own talent again. The fans can be excited and look optimistically into the future.
