Shoulder surgery for St. Pauli star: Jones is staying in Hamburg for the time being!
FC St. Pauli has been in the spotlight in recent days, and for a worrying reason: Ricky-Jade Jones, the Kiezkicker's newest winger, has been scheduled for surgery due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the friendly against Drochtersen. As Bild reports, the invasive treatment will be carried out in Hamburg next Monday.
Jones' downtime remains uncertain, although similar injuries are typically expected to take six to eight weeks, according to OneFootball. This means that the 22-year-old definitely cannot travel to the upcoming training camp in Flachau, Austria.
Preparation without Jones
Coach Alexander Blessin has already signaled that a new player may be brought into the team to make up for the painful loss of Jones. However, he emphasizes that there is no pressure to find a replacement immediately. “We have alternative solutions in the team,” said Blessin. Connor Metcalfe and Scott Banks showed convincing performances on the right in the last friendly against Silkeborg, which the boys won 4-1. Blessin sees Metcalfe as a stronger option on the wing, while demanding more physical presence from Banks.
Another potential candidate for the right wing position is Oladapo Afolayan. Blessin is convinced that his new additions can prove themselves in training and in the upcoming test matches. After the match against Karlsruhe on July 20th, games against Nice and Coventry are scheduled for July 26th and August 2nd.
Risk of injury in football
Injuries are commonplace in football. They often arise from overexertion or contact with teammates, which is not surprising in a contact sport like football. According to an article from Ärzteblatt, the risk of injury during a game is up to six times higher than during training. Jones’ shoulder injury is no exception. With his operation, after careful consideration, the doctors decided to initiate the best treatment for a speedy recovery.
Hopes now lie in effective rehabilitation and the medical team that will look after Jones while he initially remains in Hamburg. Coach Blessin will closely monitor the players' development to ensure the team is in a good position without their winger.
In the meantime, despite the challenges, the mood in the team remains positive and everyone is looking forward to the upcoming test matches in which the alternatives can prove themselves.
