St. Pauli celebrates a sensational derby win against HSV in Volkspark!

An eagerly awaited city derby ended today in the Volksparkstadion with a clear 0-2 win for FC St. Pauli against Hamburger SV. In front of 57,000 enthusiastic spectators, fans of both sides in the sold-out arena were in top form, while the players fought for every meter on the field. It was the first Bundesliga home game for HSV since 2018 and also the first derby between the two teams since the 2010-11 season, which raised expectations even higher. But the hosts were unable to live up to these expectations, as Borkener Zeitung reported in detail.

The first shock came in the 19th minute when Adam Dźwigała scored the first goal for St. Pauli after a pass from Pereira Lage. HSV, which appeared strong at the beginning, had no access to the game and showed weaknesses offensively. However, the deficit did not seem to shock the Hamburg team; they came back and tried to turn the game around. In the second half, Ransford Königsdörffer scored what was supposed to be an equalizing goal, but the VAR had something against it and canceled the goal for offside, as the AP News also reported.

A crucial moment

After the failed equalizer, Andreas Hountondji scored to make it 2-0 for St. Pauli in the 58th minute after exploiting a precise pass from Joel Fujita. It was a slap in the face for HSV, who were behind and had to try everything to at least score the next goal. In the final minutes, HSV had to make do without Giorgi Gotscholeischvili, who was sent off after a yellow-red card in the 77th minute. However, St. Pauli was unable to take advantage of this superiority and the visitors ended up with a 2-0 win.

With this success, FC St. Pauli celebrated its first derby victory since October 14, 2022 and comfortably moved to the top of the league table with four points after two match days. For HSV, who only have one point to their name after this disappointing start, the question remains as to how they can correct the mistakes in order to be more successful in the coming games.
