Future of the St. Pauli harbor edge: workshops starting soon!
What is brewing at the St. Pauli harbor edge? On September 26th and 27th, 2025 the Authority for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture to the kick-off workshop. The future of the popular harbor landscape is to be redesigned in a multi-stage process. The aim is to develop an initial vision for the harbor edge. This will be about more than just looking pretty — open spaces are the linchpin of our urban lives.
The St. Pauli harbor edge is treated in three stages. The first phase is the kick-off workshop, followed by an open workshop from November 6th to 8th, 2025, in which initial ideas will be presented by planning teams and further developed together with the public and subject matter experts. The process will finalize with a decision-making process on February 12 and 13, 2026, during which experts, politicians and civil society will select the best draft.
Redesign with a team of experts
How important this redesign is is shown by the fact that the authority wants to commission three planning teams from landscape architecture to plan the outdoor areas and carry out the workshop process. The tender that is on ausstellen-deutschland.de published states that the design work is estimated to cost over 1.7 million euros. The suitability criteria are high and include, among other things, proof of professional experience and entry in a relevant professional register.
The redesign of the harbor edge is like a puzzle in which the different parts – leisure, relaxation and ecological aspects – have to be put together harmoniously. Because, like the Institute for Open Space Development on its website represents, open spaces such as parks and squares are essential for the quality of life in our cities. They not only offer relaxation, but also make a valuable contribution to environmental protection and biodiversity, especially in times of climate change and urbanization.
There will certainly be a lot of discussion in the coming months about what the harbor edge could look like in the future. It is clear that an open dialogue between planners and citizens is essential in order to master the challenges of the future together.
