100 million euros for a new parent-child center in Rostock!
Today on July 9th, 2025 there is exciting news for the city of Rostock. At a presentation, a pioneering concept for a parent-child center (ELKI) was presented, which is intended to significantly improve medical care for the region's smallest patients. Loud Government MV Leading representatives of the Rostock University Medical Center (UMR) and the Südstadt Rostock Hospital (KSR) jointly set the course for this ambitious project.
With an investment volume of around 100 million euros, not only will a new, modern birth center be built at the Südstadt Clinic in the coming years, but the existing infrastructure of the university children's and youth clinic at the UMR will also be brought into shape. At the same time, renovation measures are planned at both locations, which will ensure high-quality medical care on site. Old wings of the children's clinic are to be demolished and replaced with contemporary new buildings.
Targeted collaboration
But what is behind the idea of the new center? The ELKI is intended to be a cross-location cooperation in which the medical departments remain at their usual locations. Health Minister Stefanie Drese described this collaboration as "forward-looking", and Science Minister Bettina Martin also emphasized how important this initiative is for the medical training and research of young doctors. A new cooperation agreement between UMR and KSR should be finalized soon.
The concept envisages that not only inpatient care will be expanded. As part of the planned measures, the academic management of neonatology at the Südstadt Clinic will also be taken over in order to further improve the care of newborns. Necessary pediatric surgical procedures are carried out directly on site at the Südstadt Clinic, which noticeably reduces the number of transports from the region to another clinic.
Interdisciplinary approaches
In addition, the parent-child center will involve pediatricians in private practice, which will ensure interdisciplinary care for the young patients and their families. Parents benefit from comprehensive care that goes far beyond pure medical care. The ELKI is intended to become a contact point and hub for further support offers for families, comparable to the concepts of family centers that have already been successfully established in other federal states. Education server describes that such facilities often act as meeting points and combine various support offers.
Close cooperation between the institutions is considered absolutely necessary in order to sustainably improve the health care of children and parents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is also particularly important that the academization of the department is promoted, which is an essential measure given the shortage of doctors in many regions.
Overall, the project shows that Rostock has a good hand for the future of healthcare. With solid planning and a clear focus on the needs of children and families, an important step towards improved medical care in the region is being taken.
