AfD is gaining ground: Leif-Erik Holm should become Prime Minister in MV!

What's going on in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania? At a state party conference in Demmin, the AfD nominated its Bundestag member Leif-Erik Holm as the top candidate for the 2026 state elections. With an impressive vote of 250 delegates and few abstentions, Holm was named candidate for prime minister. He himself has already announced: The goal is sole government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The survey results speak for themselves. The AfD is currently at 38 percent, which is double the vote in the 2021 state election. On the other hand, the ruling SPD, led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, has lost half of the voter support it had in the last election with 19 percent. This raises the question: How will this development affect the political landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

Political challenge and ambitions

Holm also sees a connection to the upcoming elections in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD is at 40 percent. “The tailwind will help us,” said the new top candidate. He has decided to convince voters in the Schwerin constituency, where Schwesig is also running. Holm wants to take over the direct mandate and has an ambitious goal in mind.

But not everyone within the AfD is completely satisfied with the situation. Before the nomination, there were disagreements about the candidacy at the top of the party. Co-state leader Enrico Schult, who did not want to run as a candidate for prime minister, is instead aiming for first place on the state list. This means that the internal dynamics of the party remain an exciting matter.

Changes in broadcasting and further plans

This is also how Holm sees the media landscape in his focus. As a possible first official act as Prime Minister, he announced the termination of the State Broadcasting Treaty and expressed criticism of public broadcasting. This suggests that Holm not only wants to change voters' favor, but also fundamental structures in MV.

Nevertheless, the election survey remains only a snapshot. The data collected are projections based on various factors, such as basic political beliefs or past election results. The real challenges will become clear in the election itself. The statistical error in polls is between 1 and 3 percentage points, meaning surprises are not excluded, as recent electoral history has shown.

Overall, the AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania now has a strong candidate at the top in Leif-Erik Holm. Whether the party will actually manage to change the political landscape next year remains to be seen. One thing is certain: we can look forward to the upcoming state elections.
