In Western Pomerania, more precisely near Anklam, a suspicion of arson is drawing dark clouds over the region. A fire recently broke out in a wheat field near the B199, which was presumably started deliberately. According to that Northern Courier The flames spread quickly on Friday last week, particularly helped by strong winds. In a dramatic turnaround for the fire department, the emergency services had to order a retreat in order to get themselves and their equipment to safety.

A total of 53 firefighters from the surrounding towns of Iven, Spantekow, Krien and Neuenkirchen were on duty. The extinguishing work proved to be challenging as around 18 hectares of wheat were almost completely burned. Several street trees and a hedge also suffered significant damage from the heat. The total damage is estimated at around 40,000 euros. The B199 had to be completely closed during the operation, which led to additional difficulties. The police are already active and are investigating arson and are also looking for witnesses.

Two fires in the same weekend

But the flames were not the only evil that struck the region. Another fire was reported early on Saturday morning in a warehouse in Groß Polzin, also near Anklam. This was an almost completely destroyed building with an area of ​​250 square meters that stored grain and agricultural equipment. The damage amounts to almost 100,000 euros. Luckily there were no injuries. Here too, the police suspect arson and have launched an investigation. Another fire that was discovered during the extinguishing work was quickly brought under control - the damage for this is around 1,000 euros, reports Baltic Sea newspaper.

The police have already activated investigators from the criminal investigation service and fire investigators to shed light on the incidents. It remains to be hoped that the darkness that hovers over Anklam will soon be illuminated by the truth and future arsons can be prevented.
