Greifswald in danger: Bus sales threaten jobs and school transport!

In an alarming announcement, Anklamer Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (AVG) has announced that it will offer around a third of its vehicle fleet for sale. Specifically, 20 of the 65 buses will be sold, which not only leads to significant restrictions in operations but also endangers the security of many jobs. This decision has a direct impact on school bus traffic in the affected regions, which concerns many parents. According to ostsee-zeitung.de the presumed deadline for the sale is October 31st, even if this has not yet been confirmed internally.

The reasons for this drastic step are complex. The AVG is struggling with financial problems and faces unresolved conflicts with the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. While the company's creditworthiness is assessed as good and sales have increased, the gap between costs and earnings is widening. This situation was influenced, among other things, by the introduction of the Deutschlandticket. A critical report by AVG shows that the company has borne losses itself in the past, which is no longer possible.

Political and economic reactions

The AVG has criticized the state authorities and the district administration for the current situation. There will be an important meeting of the district council on October 6th, at which a decision will be made on a negotiating mandate. This could be important for future planning of transport services. From January 1, 2028, a long-term takeover of the affected traffic areas by the district's own transport company (VVG) is planned, which will take over the bus operations of the Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB) in 2026. 50 bus drivers have already been affected by layoffs, which further increases the uncertainty in the transport sector.

Local public transport and mobility transition

The challenges facing the AVG come into play in a larger context of changes in local public transport (PT). According to vdv.de, the number of passengers in public transport has been increasing again since 2022, after a decline during the corona pandemic. Around 26 million passengers are transported by bus and train in Germany every day, which helps save around 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The current situation also shows how important a sustainable mobility economy is. This generates a value of around 118 billion euros in Germany and secures over 1.7 million jobs. For every euro earned in this industry, another 2.40 euros in additional added value are created. This illustrates the importance of companies like AVG within the transport sector and the challenges they face.

The coming months could be crucial, not only for AVG, but also for the future design of public transport in the Greifswald area. Developments should be monitored closely as they could have a significant impact on the community and school transport.
