Advent magic on Rügen: Five fairytale Christmas markets!

The Advent season is just around the corner and on the picturesque island of Rügen it already smells of freshly baked pastries and glowing wine! From November 28th to 30th, the contemplative time will be celebrated with numerous events that will captivate both locals and visitors. The Christmas markets and events promise not only a festive atmosphere, but also regional delicacies and cultural highlights. The Ostsee-Zeitung reports on these festive occasions, which transform the island into a winter wonderland.

In Putbus, the “Christmas Worlds” in the castle park are waiting for anyone who wants to be transported into a magical atmosphere. Handicrafts and culinary delights are offered here, and the best thing about it: entry is free. In a cozy setting, visitors can enjoy the festively decorated stalls and be warmed by blazing fireplaces. Things will also be contemplative in Juliusruh, because on November 28th the guest's house invites you to a creative afternoon of making Advent wreaths. Materials are provided, all you need to bring is a pair of secateurs and some decorative materials - all free of charge!

Christmas markets and special events

There is also an exuberant Christmas market in Bergen, organized by the DRK district association Rügen-Stralsund, which will take place on November 29th and 30th in the DRK workshops. Here, visitors can stroll to their heart's content between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and discover the diverse offerings. Lohme is offering a special highlight for the little ones on November 29th with the play “Christmas at Sea”. Musical treasure hunts and hands-on activities round off the program and promise lots of fun for the whole family.

Glowe has its own Advent market and opens its doors on November 29th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ostseehalle. Here visitors can expect creative offers for children and an exhibitor market that invites them to browse. There will also be a Christmas market in Göhren on November 29th and 30th with a colorful program of Christmas delicacies and performances by the clown Maxxx and the Sassnitz shanty choir.

For those who like it a little quieter, there will be “Advent magic” in Middelhagen on November 29th at the school museum with a Christmas market and a children's Ferris wheel that will delight the little visitors. In addition, the Christmas wish tree will be set up at Rügenhof Putgarten from the first Advent, where the popular “Giving Tree” campaign will take place until December 19th.

Traditions and regional flair

The Advent season on Rügen not only delights with markets, but also with many regional traditions. Making Advent wreaths is one of the oldest customs that is reminiscent of the cozy cosiness of the pre-Christmas season. Walks along the coast or through the Jasmund National Park following the impressive chalk cliffs are a welcome change for anyone who wants to enjoy nature.

The winter months on Rügen invite you to experience old customs such as the Rumprekker, a masked figure who brings gifts during Advent and at the same time symbolically ensures order. In addition, delicious feasts, such as roast pork with prunes and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with apples and nuts, round off the Advent season on Rügen.

Festively decorated Christmas markets offer a varied program for the whole family. With events in numerous communities - from Sassnitz to Binz - the island is all about looking forward to Christmas. Visit the traditional markets, enjoy the Christmas atmosphere and let yourself be enchanted by the warmth of Rügen.
