The countdown has begun: On October 18, 2025 the time has finally come and the second mega march on the picturesque island of Rügen is just around the corner. The start and finish point is the popular Baltic Sea resort of Sellin, where participants can prepare for an impressive adventure. Around 2,500 active hikers are expected to take on the challenges of 50 or 100 kilometers. Hundere24 GmbH organizes the event on behalf of the Rügen Tourism Association in order to promote the island's off-season, as well as the Baltic Sea newspaper reported.
“The exclusive format is only available on Rügen,” said the organizers. Participants can choose between two distance options: 50 kilometers in 12 hours or the challenge of 100 kilometers in 24 hours. Anyone who successfully reaches the 50 km mark can look forward to a finisher certificate and a medal. With a little ambition there is even the possibility of continuing after reaching your first goal and getting a second medal. This motivates many hiking enthusiasts, as the official website of the mega march explains: “The group of participants mainly consists of those who want to master the 100 km distance.”
The route
The route takes hikers through the magical coastal landscape of Rügen and offers a refreshing sea breeze as well as the beauty of nature. The path winds from Sellin via Lietzow and Neu Mukran, further through Binz and the Granitz forest back to Sellin. The participants who have decided on the 100 kilometers continue their required march towards Putbus before returning via Pantow and Lancken-Granitz. Not only the landscape, but also the feeling of community when hiking together is an important part of the event. The starting signal for the first group of participants is at 9 a.m. So that not everyone starts at once, the process takes place in groups of 300 people every quarter of an hour so that everyone has the space and peace they need to get involved in the adventure.
