The Baltic Sea island of Rügen, Germany's largest island, has established itself as the favorite backdrop for the popular ARD series “Praxis mit Meerblick”. The series has been delighting an audience of millions since 2017, and for good reason: the picturesque landscape, the “chalk cliff” panorama and the charming harbor towns such as Sassnitz, Bergen and Binz are simply irresistible. The story follows the main character Nora Kaminski, played by Tanja Wedhorn, who, after ending her career as a cruise doctor in Rügen, dares to make a new start. The series' comeback in spring 2025 is particularly exciting, after filming for new episodes took place on Rügen and in Berlin from August to October 2024, as joyn.de reports.
Rügen himself is treated almost like a main character in the series. The impressive backdrops help viewers immediately feel like they are part of this idyllic world. While the audience follows the practice scenes in the "Joint Practice Dr. Freese & Nora Kaminski", it quickly becomes clear that it only functions half-heartedly as a medical center: The exterior shots take place at Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 6 in Sassnitz, while interior shots are shot in one of the holiday apartments at number 4, as well as from prisma.de confirmed.
Filming locations and attractions
Did you know that the hospital in the series is located in the island hospital of Bergen on Rügen? The exterior shots, however, were filmed in the West Hospital in Stralsund. The apartment of Peers Kaminski, Nora's ex-husband, is also in Prora, a fascinating district of Binz that was created from historic buildings from the Nazi era. These have now been converted into chic holiday apartments. Prora is not only known for its important history, but also for its fantastic sandy beaches that invite you to relax in summer, reports placesofgermany.de.
The landscape around Rügen also offers a variety of leisure activities. Whether swimming, sailing, surfing or stand-up paddling – guests can enjoy the full maritime program in Binz and the surrounding area. The 4.2 kilometer long beach promenade with charming villas, cafés and restaurants tempts you to end the day in a relaxed manner. Bicycles are allowed on all buses in Binz, which makes exploring the island even easier.
Another interesting point is that the series often plays with the distances between locations. For example, a bicycle ride from Ralswiek to Sassnitz is shown, which in reality is almost 20 kilometers. This artistic freedom causes some irritation, but it is also what makes the series so appealing and allows you to experience what is special about the island even more intensively.
With a mixture of drama, romance and the unique flair of Rügen, “Praxis mit Meerblick” remains an integral part of the German television landscape. From spring 2025, fans can look forward to new episodes that will further deepen the connection between the impressive landscape and the character of Nora Kaminski.
