Court allows alcohol at the Jamel rocks the forester” festival!
The music and democracy festival “Jamel rocks the forester” is now taking place with a lot of excitement. On August 22nd and 23rd, 2025, the small community in the north can expect a colorful hustle and bustle after the Greifswald Higher Administrative Court finally overturned the alcohol ban on the festival grounds NDR reported. The enthusiasm could hardly be greater, but under one important condition: glass bottles remain taboo!
The dispute over the festival has been preoccupying the courts for weeks. The district of Northwest Mecklenburg had enacted an alcohol ban, but this has now been thrown into the dust with the court's latest decision. The district had also tried to charge a rent for the use of community-owned land, which the organizers were keen to avoid. To be precise, the amount should be around 8,000 euros, as well LTO reports.
The long road to approval
What is certain is that the municipality of Gägelow, which is already considered a stronghold of the right-wing extremist scene, is having difficulty approving the festival. Information from the first decision of the Schwerin Administrative Court is important here: The court determined that the municipality must agree to the contract for use, which it also rejected in the first round. Among other things, the fear of the lack of control over the event was a central point. But that also raises questions. Experts suspect that political motives are operating in the background.
The festival itself has an eventful history: Since 2007 it has been held in the garden of the founders Horst and Birgit Lohmeyer, who have had to deal with hostility since moving to the area dominated by right-wing extremists. Their goal is clear: promote democracy and combat right-wing extremism.
Politics versus party mood
The disputes over permits cast a shadow over the festival. Some critical voices from the ranks of the organizers fear that the assembly authorities could aim to discriminate against the festival with conditions such as the aforementioned alcohol ban. “Something is going wrong,” said the Lohmeyers’ lawyers. After the OVG's decision, the authority issued a new regulatory order, which reduced some requirements, but the central question of alcohol consumption remained in the room.
The joy of the court decision is somewhat clouded by the conditions attached to the festival. Nevertheless, the hope remains that, despite all the turbulence, the two days of the festival will be a great event at which the Democrats can celebrate.
Overall, it can be said that “Jamel rocks the Förster” is not only a musical event, but also a political statement of importance, which the Lohmeyers advocate for every day. One can only hope that in the end people's hearts beat faster than the discussions about leases and permits currently suggest.
