Fire brigade as an elective subject: District plans to reform for schools!
In the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, the traditional fire brigade could soon get a fresh wind. The district parliamentary groups from the LINKE, B90/Die Grünen and the party are committed to introducing fire brigade as a compulsory elective in secondary schools. The need is great because the region has been fighting for years with a lack of young people in the fire brigades. A draft resolution is to be brought in at the meeting of the district council on July 21st in Grimmen, such as the Nordkurier
goals and challenges
The goal of the new initiative in Vorpommern-Rügen is to familiarize the students early on with fire and disaster protection and to promote the volunteering of the fire brigade. Another aspect is to strengthen the security awareness and the competence of the young people. In order to achieve this, youthful knowledge in first aid, fire protection and technical assistance should learn. A prerequisite for the introduction are close cooperation with the local fire brigades, school carriers and school management as well as the clarification of exemptions and the rewarding of teachers.
The rbb24 draws attention to the fact that the project in Brandenburg already seems like a snowball effect: there was support from the inner and education ministry to expand the program and better support financially.
The implementation of this initiative could be done in the school year 2026/27, but there are still a few hurdles to be overcome. There are special difficulties in finding suitable instructors and offering lessons during regular working hours. The current occupancy of the volunteer firefighters makes it necessary to find solutions in order not to affect their professional obligations.
insights from Brandenburg
Brandenburg's approach to integrate fire brigade lessons into school education has already shown initial successes, but further developments are necessary to offer the offer across the board and to double the number of schools that offer the subject. As CDU member of the state parliament notes Nicole Walter-Mundt, the interest of the young people is unbroken, and the community is asked.
