Health meets sustainability: Greifswald's big day of action!

On June 24, 2025 took place at the University of Greifswald a day of action that was all about health and sustainability. In the immediate vicinity of the University Hospital, the region's largest employer and trainer, the event became a versatile platform for information and activities. Organizer Melissa Seidel highlighted how closely health and sustainability are linked.

A highlight of the day were information and action stands that focused on sustainable nutrition and presented regional products. In addition, a topic was discussed that never loses its relevance: the agricultural use of waterlogged moors for the production of reeds. This is not only environmentally friendly, but also helps preserve moorland landscapes.

Health through cycling

Another important point was the offer for ergonomic adjustment of bicycles, which was very popular. Bicycles are considered the most environmentally friendly means of transport, emission-free and climate-friendly, and are enjoying increasing popularity in Germany. Federal Environment Agency recommends that everyday cyclists pay attention to certain points such as the overall weight of the bike and the use of safety measures. After all, 11% of all journeys are made by Germans by bike - a number that could rise if you take the numerous advantages into account.

Cycling is not only good for the environment, but also for your health. Like that Mobility Forum Reportedly, regular cycling has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and can significantly reduce the risk of numerous diseases. WHO studies show that 30 minutes of cycling every day can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Cyclists not only have a higher quality of life, but also a longer life expectancy - by up to 14 months!

Sustainability in everyday hospital life

Uwe Reuther, the CEO of the Greifswald Clinic, took the opportunity to inform people about the ban on disposable gloves in everyday hospital life. Such initiatives show how the University of Greifswald positions itself as a role model in the sustainable use of resources. This is particularly important at a time when innovative concepts are needed to address both ecological and health challenges.

Projects like the Action Day at the University of Greifswald not only create awareness of sustainable practices, but also provide an incentive for the population to actively take care of their health. Linking health, sustainable nutrition and environmentally friendly mobility is a step in the right direction for a better future.
