Heroes of the future: 600 students conquer Technology Day in Wismar!

Wismar University of Applied Sciences opened its doors to around 600 students in grades 6 to 9 on July 19, 2025 to offer them an exciting insight into the world of technical professions at “Technology Day”. The aim of the event was to arouse interest in MINT subjects and to actively fight against the shortage of skilled workers, which is becoming increasingly noticeable in our region. NDR reports that participants were able to take part in a variety of exciting activities.

The highlights included technical experiments at around 30 stands where the students were able to test their welding and soldering skills, among other things. In addition, wooden bridges were built and robots were programmed. A special treat was the STEM racing with miniature racing cars, in which the “Baltic Evolution” team from Greifswald emerged as the winner.

Bridge builders competition

An integral part of the day was the paper bridge competition, which was held for the 31st time. Here the participants were given the challenge of building a bridge out of paper that could not exceed 45 cm in length and weigh a maximum of 200 g. In the age category from 9th grade onwards, Emil Brietzke and Mattes Liebenau from Sternberger Gymnasium secured first place with their construction holding an astonishing 21.5 kg. In the category up to 8th grade, Jari Ostendorf and Finn Winkler from the Doberan Christian Minster School also delivered an impressive performance, with their bridge handling 21.8 kg.

Another winner of the day was Felix Beyrau from Neukloster, who won the 30th paper bridge competition. Such competitions are not only a great way to apply knowledge practically, but they also promote teamwork and creativity.

Diverse activities and honors

In addition to the competitions, the participants were also informed about other important aspects of technology and engineering. Ben Passow and Tatiana Rogozina were honored in Berlin for their ideas for Südkreuz station, further evidence of the region's innovative minds and talent.

The event was organized by the Association of German Engineers (VDI), whose chairman Torsten Habicht was responsible for the day along with other events in Rostock, Neubrandenburg and Stralsund. A total of 1,800 students are registered for this, which illustrates the enthusiasm for technical careers.

Ultimately, Wismar University would like to not only teach students a good knack for technology through events like this, but also show them the possibilities that are available to me today.
