Drunk drivers turn themselves in to the police – bizarre incidents!

In a strange episode, two men from the Rostock district reported themselves to the police, both under the influence of alcohol. What causes you to find yourself in a police station? One might think that it requires a special amount of courage or a good deal of recklessness.

The first incident occurred on Monday morning in Bützow. A 55-year-old man parked his van in front of the police station and went inside. The officers quickly noticed the strong smell of alcohol and carried out a breath alcohol test, which showed an alarming 1.23 per mille. This led to him being taken to hospital for a blood test. Of course, his driver's license was confiscated, but after the necessary measures the man was allowed to leave the station again.

One more time in the night

On Monday evening, around midnight, a 33-year-old man went to the police in Güstrow - supposedly to report an accident involving wildlife. His parking behavior was already conspicuous because he parked his Mazda on the sidewalk opposite the office. Here, too, the police quickly determined that he was significantly intoxicated. A breath alcohol test showed a shocking 2.43 per mille. As in the first incident, blood was taken and the driver's license was confiscated. The vehicle keys were finally handed over to his partner before he was allowed to leave the station.

However, the disaster took its course: Shortly after the first police check, the 33-year-old was stopped again on a bicycle on Eisenbahnstrasse, where another alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 2.02. The entire problem of drunk driving becomes clear, as the criminal police are now investigating both men - and even twice against the 33-year-old.

Drunk driving – a serious issue

These incidents are not only amusing, but also highlight the serious consequences of drunk driving, which endangers other road users. The current blood alcohol limits in Germany are clearly defined: there is a strict 0.0 alcohol limit ban for new drivers up to the age of 21 and people in their probationary period. Depending on the symptoms, an alcohol level of 0.3 per mille can already become a criminal offence. From 1.1 per mille, the unfitness to drive is clearly present and leads to criminal consequences, although from 1.6 per mille a medical-psychological examination (MPU) is required.

Drunk driving not only leads to fines and points in Flensburg, but in the worst case scenario it can also lead to a driver's license being revoked or even a prison sentence, especially in the event of injuries or deaths. In 2024, for example, there were around 95 traffic accidents every day in Germany that were caused by alcohol. Especially on Father's Day, the number of alcohol-related accidents rose dramatically to 287.

As the incidents in Rostock show, drinking and driving has serious consequences. It is essential to always take your own ability to drive into account and, if in doubt, to avoid driving - for your own safety and that of everyone else. The spirits you call are often not the ones you want. Let us pay attention to these strange encounters as well as the serious dangers they bring with them.
