Güstrow sports history: New brochure celebrates local legends!

An exciting event is coming up in Güstrow today: the publication of the new brochure on Güstrow's sports history. The city's sports chroniclers have really stepped up their game with number 16 and are presenting a work that takes a close look at motorsport, badminton and volleyball. The focus is particularly on the stories of the major sports clubs that have shaped sporting life here. Loud Northern Courier The magazine will be ceremoniously presented on July 10th at 4 p.m. in the Bildungshaus at Heideweg 60. An occasion that no sports fan should miss!

Well-known oldies of Güstrow sports come on stage, such as the Güstrow Men's Gymnastics Club (MTV) from 1861, the BSG Lokomotive Güstrow and the Güstrow Sports Club from 1906. These clubs not only had a great influence on local sport, but were also lovingly embedded in the new brochure. The chroniclers themselves are a mature group: most of the club's members are over 70 or 80 years old and can look back on a long-standing passion for sports history.

A valuable archive

The archive of the chroniclers' association has filled up considerably over the years. A closer look at the sources reveals an exciting collection that was created through newspaper research, information from sports clubs and the hard work of citizens. Furthermore, the city and state archives, the city museum and the unique historical library of the Uwe Johnson Library are available as sources of information, such as Club chronicles explained. In order to preserve the spirit of the times and sporting successes, the experts are not afraid to seek external help.

It is exciting to see how the archives have been maintained and expanded over the years. An important point: For a whole decade, the chroniclers' association was able to employ two ABM staff who actively helped with the archive work. This support has proven to be worth its weight in gold.

Sport and education in focus

But there is not only a lot to report about sports. Literary highlights also find their place. The German Library Association recently announced the search for the “Library of the Year in Small Municipalities and Regions” again. This award, launched in 2020, promotes the innovative and valuable work of libraries in communities with up to 50,000 residents Library Association. For 2025, the application deadline was March 31st and the award ceremony will be celebrated in October.

Such initiatives are intended not only to promote readers in their communities, but also to improve the image of libraries in smaller cities. This means that the education sector remains just as lively as sport in Güstrow!
