Poland overtakes China: record trade with Germany is booming!
The German export industry has strongly extended its feelers to the east and sees great potential in trade with Poland and the surrounding countries. This is particularly evident in the trade volume with Poland, which increased by 4.6 billion euros to over 90 billion euros in the first half of 2025, an increase of 5.4 percent compared to the previous year. German exports to Poland increased by 2.6 billion euros (+5.7%), while imports from Poland increased by 2 billion euros (+5.2%). These developments place Poland in fifth place among Germany's most important trading partners, just behind France. What is impressive is that German exports to Poland, at 49.4 billion euros, now exceed exports to China (41.4 billion euros), which shows that Poland is now the most important sales market for German goods. This is reported by nordkurier.de.
It appears that trade with Ukraine and other Eastern countries has also increased. In the first half of 2025, German exports to Ukraine even rose by 30 percent to 4.6 billion euros. The Eastern Committee has highlighted the successful cooperation between Germany and Poland since the EU enlargement in 2004, which supports this positive development.
Trade dynamics and challenges
Of course there are also challenges in trading. However, current controls at the German-Polish border have no negative impact on the trade balance, report the logistics associations. Nevertheless, the logistics association BGL is calling for special regulations for the handling of trucks, especially in view of the over 9.7 million entries and exits of trucks subject to toll that were registered at the border in 2024.
However, the situation in the region is not all rosy. German imports from Russia have fallen by a significant 58 percent, causing Russia to slip to 12th place among the 29 Eastern trading countries. This development could have long-term implications for trade relations and shows how disruptive geopolitical changes can be.
Outlook for the future
The figures for the full year comparison show that trade relations between Germany and Poland are stabilizing and continuing to grow. In 2024, the volume of German-Polish foreign trade exceeded the limit of 171 billion euros at 171.9 billion euros, which represents a moderate increase of 0.2 percent. In view of these increases, Poland is increasingly perceived as an attractive market for German exporters, which applies across sector boundaries.
In summary, it should be noted that Germany and Poland are not only heading for economic success, but are also facing common challenges that bring with them both opportunities and risks. The view of the Central and Eastern Europe region will certainly become even more exciting in the coming years, as other countries such as Kazakhstan are also gaining in importance and new trade relationships are emerging.
