Serious traffic accident in Mölschow: horse injured, driver unharmed!
On August 30, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred on Trassenheider Chaussee in 17449 Mölschow. At around 5:00 p.m., a Ford Transit collided with a horse that ran uncontrollably onto the road. The 15-year-old rider previously fell from her horse, which was caught by a 48-year-old driver. Fortunately, both the rider and the driver remained uninjured. However, the horse suffered serious injuries to its hindquarters and had to be taken to a veterinary clinic in Krakow am See. The estimated material damage amounts to around 9,000 euros, as reported by newsflash24.de.
Accidents of this kind are not uncommon in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In 2023, there were a total of 55,641 traffic accidents in the country, an increase of 4% compared to the previous year. This resulted in 4,880 accidents with personal injuries, which accounts for around 8.77% of the total accidents. The majority of these accidents, namely 90%, only resulted in sheet metal damage. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Police emphasizes that one person dies in a traffic accident every six days and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures to improve traffic safety.
The challenges of traffic safety
The statistics for 2023 provide a sobering outlook for road safety in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Despite a decline in the number of seriously injured people - a decrease of 13% to 1,105 compared to 2022 - 57 people lost their lives in road traffic. Interior Minister Christian Pegel explains that fatal accidents often occur, especially on weekends such as Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. This is further reinforced by the frequent dangerous tree accidents, which account for 47% of traffic fatalities.
The increase in traffic accidents involving e-scooters, bicycles and wildlife accidents is similarly worrying. There were a total of 105 e-scooter riders involved in accidents in 2023, while the number of accidents involving wildlife rose to 17,027 and such an incident occurred every 31 minutes. More and more people are traveling on two wheels, but the infrastructure for cyclists is often criticized as inadequate. This is also confirmed by Horst Krumpen from the ADFC regional association MV, who classifies the risks for cyclists in busy areas as high.
Future outlook and new concepts
In order to counteract the increasing traffic accident rate, the state government has launched a new traffic safety concept until 2030. The goal is to reduce the number of traffic deaths by 40% by 2030 compared to 2020. This concept focuses, among other things, on the safe use of Pedelecs as well as practical cycling training for children in fourth grade. Technological progress should help to further increase road safety.
Given the increasing number of accidents and infrastructure demands, it is essential that all road users, from drivers to cyclists, act more carefully and responsibly. This is the only way to improve road safety in the long term and to reduce tragic accidents like the one in Mölschow. The current accident statistics shows how important it is to assume all responsibility and thus prevent further tragedies.
