Fire drama in Ludwigslust: Families lost everything, police are investigating!

A dramatic scenario took place in Ludwigslust on Sunday, November 16, 2025. A fire broke out in an apartment building on Kanalstrasse, which had shocking consequences for the residents. The tenant Uwe Winkel noticed the smoke in his apartment and initially thought it was a technical defect in his television. A few seconds later, however, he suspected something worse and informed his neighbors about the danger. At 11:45 a.m. the time had come: the fire came from a ground floor apartment and the flames were already visible when the fire department arrived. All apartments in the house are now uninhabitable and the situation is more than dramatic for many people.

The fire department was able to act in time and rescued four residents from the upper floors, including a young family with their baby. All were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation, although fortunately their injuries were only minor. Four people required medical attention, while the rest of the building's 15 residents were brought to safety after a quick evacuation. Tragically, many tenants, like Uwe Winkel, were unable to save anything from their apartments. He is now temporarily staying with his brother and has already contacted the housing association to find new accommodation, while the city of Ludwigslust is offering support for those affected and organizing replacement accommodation.

Support for those affected

The willingness to help in Ludwigslust is great. Raimo Reincke from the Ludwigslust brewery is also affected because an employee lost his apartment in the fire. Fortunately, the employee's family was not on site at the time of the incident. The local delivery service “Taj-Pizza”, which was housed in the affected building, will remain closed until further notice, which poses an additional economic challenge for the entire area.

The police have now started investigating the cause of the fire, which is still unclear. The material damage is estimated at around 100,000 euros. Unfortunately, such fire incidents are not uncommon. According to the Institute for Loss Prevention and Loss Research of Public Insurers (IFS), there have been regular investigations into the cause of fires in recent years, with the main focus being on electricity and human error. A worrying trend is the increasing number of battery fires caused by the increasing spread of battery-operated devices, as Feuertrutz reports.

The named cause of the fire in Ludwigslust remains undetermined, but the affected tenants and the city are waiting for answers and appropriate measures to improve fire protection. Loss of income due to the closure of businesses and the absence of home is a profound burden on affected citizens. It will be important to everyone to use the remaining options to ensure that reconstruction and the well-being of those affected progress quickly - both socially and emotionally. The city has already taken clear steps to assist the victims.
