Berlin's new magnetic levitation train: future project or castle in the sky?

Transport policy in Berlin could soon take a revolutionary turn: Transport Senator Ute Bonde is optimistic about the introduction of a magnetic levitation train in the capital. This innovative transport solution is not only intended to be quiet and cost-effective, but also offers the prospect of autonomous driving, which could make commuting much easier. In autumn 2024, Bonde plans to present a comprehensive concept for mobility in Berlin up to 2035. The chances for this technology look good, as it is firmly anchored in the federal coalition agreement between the Union and the SPD, as nordkurier.de reports.

The discussion about the magnetic levitation train has already begun. In November 2023, CDU parliamentary group leader Dirk Stettner proposed a pilot route in downtown Berlin, which was viewed skeptically by some political opponents. Raed Saleh, the SPD parliamentary group leader, described Stettner's plans as “castles in the air”. The Association for Environmental and Nature Conservation (BUND) Berlin criticized the project as “absurd”. But Ute Bonde believes that public discussion is important and emphasizes the need to be open to new technologies in order to modernize mobility in Berlin.

Planned routes and benefits

Various possible routes for the magnetic levitation train are already on the table. A connection between the International Congress Center (ICC) and BER Airport is being planned, as is a possible ring that includes the S-Bahn connections and the national border. Bonde suggests passengers can check in downtown or even check suitcases before getting to the maglev train. Another point is the possibility that freight distribution centers in Brandenburg could benefit from this new rail network.

The vision is to not only offer commuters modern and fast transport through the magnetic levitation train, but also to improve connections to the outskirts. Kai Wegner, Berlin's governing mayor, has also emphasized this and is pushing for a comprehensive mobility strategy for the city's outskirts.

New technologies consistent with environmental goals

The introduction of the maglev train is not just a question of infrastructure; it can also be seen in the context of the city's environmental policy objectives. The maglev train is treated in the municipal transport financing law in the same way as trams and subways, which simplifies financing. The project could therefore be a pioneering sign for the integration of modern technologies in urban areas, which also takes environmental standards into account.

The future development of the magnetic levitation train in Berlin is eagerly awaited. If the plans become more concrete, this could have a significant impact on mobility in the city and possibly revolutionize the way Berliners commute to work or get around the city in the future. Berlin, a place where tradition and modernity are skilfully interwoven, is once again at the beginning of an exciting chapter in its transport history.
