Digital freedom for seniors: Neubrandenburg app conquers hearts!

There is exciting news in Neubrandenburg and the surrounding area for everyone who wants to find their way in the digital age. In recent days, much emphasis has been placed on the participation of older people in digital development. A meeting of the so-called “Silversurfers” recently took place, at which the goal was clearly stated: to reduce inhibitions when using digital technology and to create new opportunities for seniors.

One example was a man who asked for his bus stop during the meeting while proudly looking at his smartphone. Participants had the opportunity to take a closer look at the Neubrandenburger Stadtwerke app. This app not only provides information about garbage collection, but also a calendar of events and the ability to report defects. Helmut Nimmer from the Seniors' Advisory Council emphasized how useful this app is in everyday life for seniors, especially when it comes to doctor's visits. Thanks to the app, RUFus buses can be easily ordered and paid for.

Silversurfer conference and training

Another highlight is already just around the corner: On November 19th, the third seniors' conference will take place in the House of Culture and Education (HKB), which has the motto "Shaping the future together". Here visitors can find out about local initiatives and get involved in urban development. Admission to the conference is free and registration is not required.

In the meantime, a group of 15 new “silver surfers” in the Mecklenburg Lake District have completed their training. These committed seniors learned basic digital topics on a total of ten dates. The aim of the project is to recruit new volunteer SilverSurfers who will develop advice or course offerings specifically for seniors. Questions range from “How do I save images from WhatsApp?” to “How do I recognize false reports on the Internet?” The project is funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Sport.

The new SilverSurfers come from various cities such as Neubrandenburg, Waren and Röbel and will in future offer advisory services in public institutions such as libraries and district centers. Project leader Carolin Illerhaus-Kulow emphasizes the relevance of digital education for all age groups and encourages technically savvy seniors to register for training next year.

Easy access to knowledge

From January, SilverSurfer's advisory services will be available on the website isbw.de be available. This means that interested parties can ask their questions and exchange ideas easily and simply in a protected environment. In addition, the outgoing seniors are willing to share their knowledge and thus close the digital divide.

Overall, it shows that the “Silversurfer” initiative has a good handle on the needs of older people and helps to give back some independence. The developments in Neubrandenburg are a real ray of hope and create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who wants to find their way better in the digital world. The city has organized numerous digitalization events for seniors in recent years, which underlines the importance of digitalization in the everyday life of the older generation.

For anyone who would like more information or has questions, the Silversurfer contact options are available: by telephone at 03991/180037 or by email: mitmachzentrale@isbw.de. The future is digital – and everyone can get a piece of it!
