Family feud escalates: snack bar robbery in Neubrandenburg solved!

In Neubrandenburg's Datzeberg, a tragic family feud has caused a stir in recent months. There was already a dramatic incident in March 2022 when a 59-year-old snack bar operator was attacked in his storage room. The investigation revealed that three men, including the victim's 38-year-old ex-son-in-law, were suspected of being involved in the attack. The men were initially in custody due to an alleged dispute over protection money. But how NNN.de reported, it soon turned out that the victim had inflicted the stab wounds and cuts himself in order to simulate murder or manslaughter.

The attack, in which the victim was beaten and held by the perpetrators, may have resulted from a deep personal rivalry. The main defendant admitted that he acted out of “anger” because he felt he was being treated unfairly by his ex-father-in-law. The main defendant now lives in Hamburg after leaving his family. The court sentenced him to pay his ex-father-in-law 500 euros in compensation, which he accepted. The other two defendants denied any involvement and the case against them was dropped due to minor guilt.

Another incident

On July 22, 2025, another dramatic incident occurred in the Neubrandenburg town hall when a 28-year-old triggered a police operation. The man, who was already known to the police and was in a psychological state of emergency, pulled out a knife while trying to clarify something in office. Fortunately, no one was injured and the man was subdued by officers and taken to a clinic. In such cases it becomes clear how important long-term management of mental illness is in order to prevent violence. This is also made clear by the DGPPN's position paper, which underlines the importance of careful psychiatric treatment.

The DGPPN (German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) recommends expanding existing care structures for people with mental illnesses in order to reduce the risk of violent acts. According to the experts, the key is professional treatment, which has been proven to reduce the risk of violent acts. Among them is Professor Dr. Euphrosyne Gouzoulis-Mayfrank, who points out that social integration, treatment and support are essential for those affected. It is of great importance, in particular, to provide intensive care to people who have been aggressive in the past and to support them in their return to normal life, as can be read on the DGPPN website: dgppn.de.

In an environment where mental illness is often associated with violence, it is essential to focus on prevention and treatment. The image of the violent psychiatric patient is not only a stigma, but also an obstacle to social integration. Against this background, the current incidents in Neubrandenburg are not only tragic, but also give rise to reflection on how violent acts can be better prevented in the future.
