Art tour in Neubrandenburg: Discover the East Modernity!

On Tuesday, July 15th, the city of Neubrandenburg cordially invites you to a special tour of the Oststadt. The event for the 777th anniversary of the city begins at 5 p.m. at the Reh sculpture in Einsteinstrasse 6a/B and promises an exciting tour of discovery. The approximately 1.5 kilometer route leads through the impressive architecture and art of the east modern - a topic that is becoming increasingly important.

The tour takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and is particularly suitable for people with walking aids. If you are not afraid, you can increase the tour for an additional kilometer. This option includes a few inclines and stairs and ends in Salvador-Allende-Straße 17. The walk is completely free and offers the opportunity to experience venerable structural relics of the GDR period up close.

Neubrandenburg's monuments in view

The project "Ostmodernene in Neubrandenburg", opened by Minister of Culture Bettina Martin, has set itself the task of capturing and scientifically preparing the building culture and art in public space from the GDR period (1945-1990). The aim is to introduce younger generations to the evidence of the GDR and to close knowledge gaps about this era. When recording, the city of Neubrandenburg combines its strength with the state monument preservation and the art collection of Neubrandenburg, everything supported by the country and various foundations.

The situation in Neubrandenburg is unique. The city, strongly shaped by the GDR, has a variety of buildings and works of art that reflect not only architecture, but also the political ideals of that time. Works of art in public space were often given political messages and should convey idealized images of a new, socialist society. These stylistic currents are summarized under the umbrella -term east modern.

a profit for cultural history

The results of the project, which builds on an earlier project - "inside and outside - art in the north of the GDR" - should ultimately result in a reference work and learning materials for schools. This not only maintains history, but also an active contribution to the cultural identity of the former GDR residents.

Everything is shown and explained by expert guides who bring the monuments and the stories behind them. The interest and importance of these topics is captivating more and more people - a wonderful example of how living history enriches the present.

For everyone who wants to take part in this tour, there is an excellent opportunity to go on a journey into the past and to discover the art and architecture of the Eastern Modernism. The event is a welcome initiative to bring into the fore in Neubrandenburg's unique cultural history.
