Art tour in Neubrandenburg: Discover Eastern Modernism!
On Tuesday, July 15th, the city of Neubrandenburg cordially invites you to a special tour of the eastern part of the city. The event for the city's 777th anniversary begins at 5 p.m. at the deer sculpture at Einsteinstrasse 6a/b and promises an exciting tour of discovery. The approximately 1.5 kilometer long route leads through the impressive architecture and art of Eastern Modernism - a topic that is increasingly coming into focus.
The tour takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and is particularly suitable for people with walking aids. If you're not afraid, you can add an additional kilometer to the tour. This option involves a few inclines and stairs and ends at Salvador-Allende-Straße 17. The walk is completely free and offers the opportunity to experience venerable architectural relics from the GDR era up close.
Neubrandenburg's architectural monuments at a glance
The “East Modernism in Neubrandenburg” project, opened by Culture Minister Bettina Martin, has set itself the task of recording and scientifically processing the building culture and art in public spaces from the GDR period (1945-1990). The aim is to introduce younger generations to the evidence of the GDR and to close gaps in knowledge about this era. When recording, the city of Neubrandenburg combines its forces with the state monument preservation and the Neubrandenburg art collection, all supported by the state and various foundations.
The situation in Neubrandenburg is unique. The city, strongly influenced by the GDR, has a large number of buildings and works of art that reflect not only the architecture but also the political ideals of that time. Works of art in public spaces often carried political messages and were intended to convey idealized images of a new, socialist society. These stylistic trends are summarized under the umbrella term Eastern Modernism.
A win for cultural history
The results of the project, which builds on an earlier project – “Inside and outside – art in the north of the GDR” – will ultimately result in a reference work and learning materials for schools. This not only preserves history, but also makes an active contribution to the cultural identity of the former GDR residents.
Everything is shown and explained by expert guides who bring the monuments and the stories behind them to life. The interest and importance of these topics is captivating more and more people - a wonderful example of how living history enriches the present.
Anyone who would like to take part in this walking tour will have an excellent opportunity to take a journey into the past and discover the art and architecture of Eastern Modernism. The event is a welcome initiative to showcase Neubrandenburg's unique cultural history. For further information, see Nordkurier and Kultur MV.
