Neubrandenburg discovers Eastern Modernism: Citizens should report art!
What is happening in Neubrandenburg? The city is currently on the move and has set itself the task of an ambitious project: the study of works of art in public spaces is being promoted under the title “Eastern Modernism”. In particular, a wall relief on the facade of the grill bar should be examined for its heritage value. Mayor Nico Klose has called on the population to report other works that could be considered for possible recording. “Every tip is valuable,” emphasizes Klose.
The “Eastern Modernism” project has turned out to be very important. Loud NDR Almost every third monument in Neubrandenburg dates back to the GDR era, and the city intends to protect and evaluate many of these objects in the future.
Exploring art in public spaces
The two art historians entrusted with the investigation took a close look at an aluminum mural that formerly adorned the grill bar. If this image is classified as worthy of protection, it could even find a place under monument protection. And that's just the beginning: the project has been running for over a year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. It is interesting that findings from Neubrandenburg will also be used for future projects in other cities such as Rostock and Schwerin.
Don't forget to take part in this important initiative! The city is actively searching for additional architectural treasures, and every contribution could be crucial for the future appreciation of Eastern Modern architecture in the region.
Context to Eastern Modernism
The project is part of a larger movement that is also gaining importance in cities like Chemnitz. The opening of a new district heating route and the cultural review of the history of Eastern modernity raise interesting questions. That too Institute for Eastern Modernism With its digital platform, plays a key role in processing and clarifying this time.
Eastern modernism is also brought into creative focus through concerts and artistic contributions. The BETON-POP concert series with a large number of artists from Eastern and Western Europe who deal with the legacy of prefabricated building architecture shows how lively this era still is today. A double LP of the series will also be available in Chemnitz.
While Neubrandenburg brings its treasures to light, the discourse on Eastern modernity is also unfolding in other places in Germany. It remains exciting to observe how the various projects intertwine and carry the past into the present and future.
