Hero of the road: Driver saves himself from burning Opel on B96!

Late on Friday evening there was a spectacular incident on federal highway 96 near Groß Nemerow. An Opel Zafira burst into flames while driving. The 41-year-old driver noticed the smoke around 7:50 p.m. and had the presence of mind to steer his vehicle onto the shoulder in time. Fortunately, he was uninjured before the car caught fire, reports Northern Courier.

The Neubrandenburg police were quickly on the scene and alerted two patrol cars and also mobilized a large number of rescue workers. Volunteer fire brigades from Burg Stargard, Groß Nemerow – Rowa and Teschendorf arrived with ten vehicles and a total of 29 emergency services to get the fire under control.

Fire department reaction force

The fire department quickly got the situation under control and quickly brought the fire under control. Unfortunately, in the end all that was left of the Opel Zafira was a burned-out wreck. The material damage is estimated at around 10,000 euros. A technical defect in the vehicle could come into focus as a possible cause of the fire.

While the fire was being extinguished, the B96 was completely closed for around 15 minutes, which led to minor traffic delays. A diversion was established and once the fire-fighting work was completed, traffic was able to be diverted past the accident site in a single lane until the wreckage was recovered and the roadway was cleaned.

Cause of fire and insurance coverage

A landlocked country like northern Germany is not immune to arson in this form. These types of incidents often result in significant damage to vehicles, statistics show. Not only is arson a crime, but it can result in severe penalties and civil liability for perpetrators. It is therefore crucial to report incidents like this to the police immediately in order to identify possible perpetrators. If the perpetrator remains unidentified, car owners could be stuck with the costs. How ADAC As explained, partial comprehensive insurance is essential if you want to cover damage caused by fire or explosion to your own vehicle, while motor vehicle liability insurance does not cover damage to your own car, but only to strangers.

Car owners without partial or fully comprehensive insurance are particularly at risk in the event of arson and similar incidents, as they would have to cover the costs themselves if the arsonist cannot be found. It therefore makes sense to find out about the various insurance options in advance so that you are not left without financial support in the event of damage.

What's happening on the B96 once again underlines how important it is to keep a watchful eye on the road. It also shows that the quick action of the driver and the fire department that arrived were able to prevent something worse from happening. Sometimes you just have to do what is necessary - like the presence of mind of the driver of the Opel Zafira. Who knows what else could have happened.
